Quoted from chuckwurt:

I’m not gonna sit here and take all this Big Game art Slander!!
Gerry Simkus and Doug Watson deserve better.

OP made a big mistake picking a game with some of the best art of its era.

I don't get where people get all upset for a discussion of what could have been better? Why does that subject seem so taboo?

We just think your opinion sucks

Quoted from ectobar:

I like Spooky, but being as Halloween and Ultraman are literally the only games you can't make a profit on selling in this ridiculous market says enough.

I thought Ultraman was a beautiful, fun game at last year’s SFGE. I haven’t had much time on it though. I’m lucky to have a few Spooky-lovin’ pals who will buy one.

Here's an example of a change I'd make - fixing basic human anatomy and proportions. Don't know any good art director who would let this kind of thing go into production. This is a rough comp. Before and after.

Quoted from MtnFrost:

Which opinion? All I did was ask if there were any pins you think that should have better art. You may not agree with an opinion, and that's fine.

I think the specific examples you mention actually have good art. But I’m not an artist, so I guess my opinion counts for less?

It’s easy to pick things apart from a distance of 30-40 years. I’d rather focus on what’s best from that time.

Better stay away from Christian Marche games

Yeah, pointy people rule! I won’t make the mistake of selling my OXO again.

Quoted from MtnFrost:

They aren't, it's just you don't know anatomy and probably haven't done any life drawing. It's not a knock on you, but you clearly aren't an artist. Her neck and head were coming out of her left shoulder. Now they line up with her spine. Her neck was about 6 inches longer than it should be in that position, too. Her arm was too large for a woman and it's position in distance, now it's not.

You posted 2 pictures that look almost identical to me, and I’m viewing them on a large iPad Pro. The ONLY difference I see is in the “after” it looks she doesn’t have a neck, or like she’s ducking.

This wins the internet for today.

You see, Swampfire, they are very different, not the same at all. I guess you didn't see it because you're not trained as an artist? Which is not a negative, anymore than I'm lost looking at anything but the basics of schematics, since I'm not trained as an electrician.

I can tell you’re not a bad person at all, just opinionated. Nothing wrong with that, and it’s not a bad topic. I just would have picked different examples.

Quoted from MtnFrost:

I'll keep posting things I would have done. I don't mind if you disagree

What I would like to see is what you WOULD do, given a particular license. For all I know, you’re the next Zombie Yeti or Dirty Donnie and you want to make a splash. So, impress us. Let’s say your next license is “The Who” or “Jimi Hendrix” (dream themes). What you do?

Honestly the topic is valid, but you should be picking apart the ridiculous alternate translites that some people are cranking out (pics only edited to avoid deletion of this post):

Quoted from GSones:

Mata Hari. Love the gameplay and most of the art but I would have removed a few of the rolls on her stomach and gone with a more "toned" look.
[quoted image]

Remember that this was 1979, before we turned into a nation of fitness freaks. I think the rolls are accurate, given her pose. My only problem is with the choice of model, who looks nothing like the real Mata Hari. But the backglass art is so damned good, it’s hard to get too upset about it.

Quoted from MtnFrost:

Mata Hari was always one I liked the art, but the gameplay never lived up to it.

If you were a trained pinball player, you’d have a better appreciation for the gameplay.

Lots of chatter about the middle of Rush’s playfield. I don’t think it’s that bad - it matches their early appearances pretty well. What would You have done differently, assuming you have creative control but needed the band’s blessing for their likenesses?

Quoted from MtnFrost:

there's no detail, like an airbrush drawing at a fair.

That’s actually a pretty good summary. It’s not “bad” - certainly I don’t notice it while I’m playing. But would I put that on a t-shirt and wear it proudly? - nah. Fortunately all 3 backglasses are great (LE might be best ever), so it doesn’t detract from the game’s appearance too much.

Maybe Rush was an inspiration for Spinal Tap. The playfield does have good likenesses to 70’s Rush, though Geddy’s caricature looks more like he does now.

Saw a live one at the only circus I attended as a kid. My dad walked us right by the PETA chicks in cages to get in.

That’s hot.

Quoted from girloveswaffles:

You seriously think this artwork is done by the same artist and that it looks just like the art on the back glass?!?

Sure looks that way to me!
