I don't think you had to wait for the flash, just the act of smearing them (yuck) would mix enough of the luciferin and luciferase.
Funny names, they are neither flies nor bugs but beetles, and the light they produce is cold, totally unlike fire or lightning! Some subspecies don't even make light at all!
