I suspect lots of the lighted speaker panel owners will also be adding the upcoming colorDMD. We need a solution for the molex connectors which will be getting in the way of the LCD.

    Preliminary thoughts:
    - low-profile right angle Molex adapter. I haven't had any luck locating such a product yet

    - solder to wires directly onto the pins. Not an elegant solution

    - just use standoffs long enough to clear the connectors. I'm not sure I will like the look of a recessed display

Hopefully smarter people than me will help devise better solutions. Lets hear them!

Will soldering the wires to the pins work?

This is what I would try first how far back does it need to be to fit? I have not measured how far the connector sticks out.

I haven't either. I will try to when I get home, unless someone would kindly post it first

Or maybe replace the header pins with this:

I suspect that would be a major PIA, however.

Any pictures of what you're trying to work around?

    #7 5 years ago

Oh man....I didn't even THINK of this.

Crap. Someone come up with an easy solution!

yep, we need some close up pictures of the connectors how much they stick out etc. The spacers would work, but may push the LCD to far back?

Solution - sell me your speaker panel mod.

Yea - where did that bad boy come from?

    #12 5 years ago

I'm still having a little trouble picturing the interference and how much space you have to work with. I'm guessing it's all three connectors along the bottom edge, correct? I'm also assuming they're 0.1" pitch based on your Jameco link.

My first thought would be an IDC connector for the cable side. Even though they have a bad rep, the wires would exit at a right angle, probably being lower profile.

Idea #2 would to use a right angle, through hole socket with square tails as an adapter of sorts. The measurements are tricky, and you'd have extra connections to possibly cause grief. Something like a Samtec SSQ-107-02-F-S-RA.

Actually, on my machine the current DMD standoffs are about the same height as the largest connector(see photo). Perhaps it won't require as much manipulation as I thought.

Has anyone with a speaker panel mod ordered a color dmd on here?

I have. It should be delivered soon. I will report back regarding installation.

    #17 5 years ago

Same here, it is out on delivery.

    #18 5 years ago

Hoping it works! Please let us know.

Cool! good to know, I am holding off getting one until I see how it mounts on there. Let us know with some picts of the install!

Thanks. I am also holding off on ordering but as soon as I see someone get it mounted, I'm in.

I think if you want to add the color dmd you will need to replace the 3 male connecters with the L Style on the boards and then add a little extra spacing.

    #22 5 years ago

I'm sure there are other ways to solve this, but I replaced the 3 header pins that were in the way with 90 degree angle header pins and it gives me just enough clearance to mount the LCD properly. I would only encourage you to do this yourself if you are comfortable unsoldering/soldering, otherwise have someone you know who can do it for you so you don't damage your shit.

    nice job RazerX

hopefully this is something that mr. thompson will take into consideration when he returns to the forum and announces another run of his speaker panel board mod

    #24 5 years ago

Hey RazerX.Can you post a list of the connecter replacements you used?
I will be modding a friend's and would like to get the parts ordered. Thanks

    Nice solution RazerX.

Would only add that if attempting this, remember to be sure and always use an adjustable-temperature station only for board work--and solder between 650 and 700 degrees.

I picked mine up at a local shop near work, but these are very common parts. You can get these from Ed at GPE, Digikey, Mouser, etc or possibly a local shop like Fry's.

These are for the 2 smaller rows of header pins (.100):
    Product ID: 69191-509H
Connector, 0.1" Header, 9-Pin, Right Angle
    http://greatplainselectronics.com/Category-74.asp
You'll need to get a couple and chop em down to be 7 pin and 8 pin that you need.

These are for the 1 bigger row of header pins (.156):
    Product ID: 26-48-1246
Connector, 0.156" Header, 24 Pin, Right Angle
    http://greatplainselectronics.com/Category-79.asp
You'll need to trim it down to just the 7 pin that you need.

Thanks for the info.It will save me a 10 min drive.

Installed mine earlier on, I'm not having many clearance issues as you guys are worried about. This is my first colorDMD so I'm not sure if this gap is larger than most, but all four mounting points sit flush and theres no real issue with the connectors hitting the screen, the wires SLIGHTLY brush against it, but nothing causing high stress.

I'll look into the right angle pins later, but for now its just fine.

If it's not sitting flush against the foam around the window, then it's not installed properly (according to the instructions) and the LCD is recessed a little further back. The white spacers that came with it are supposed to be installed first, not the original black spacers. If you're ok with it, then there's really no need to change it, seriously. Some people are nit picky about stuff like that with their games, like me

    #30 5 years ago

I suppose I'm not that picky then, but I was also just wanting to slap it in there to experience all its glory! No experience soldering pins but my friend is, perhaps he can lend a hand.
