My new winter project: Stripping out the playfield for clear coat/touch up and refresh. I don't have the energy to put into restoring the cabinet and I'm already waiting for one cabinet for another machine. So a cabinet restoration will wait until another time or year. The playfield is generally good condition and certainly another example of reimports (This is a German one) aren't always in the worst shape. This machine was in pretty good shape when I picked it up over 5 years ago. I paid $2500 and needed the right ramp (A support was broken but it really didn't need it) since the machine was in really good shape I figured it deserved it, broken snack bar and KISS plastics like most all. And the far right vertical row was out on the DMD. I replaced them all right after getting the machine and even though it was really clean when I got it, I shopped it and put in a LED kit. The hologram is green and forgot all about me putting in a green Pinbits mirror way back when. The only repairs I've done to it in five years: trough kicker needed new sleeve, broken wire on playground VUK, and reflow a light board or two. I did replace the other ramps and a new window over the years. I forgot just how nice the snackbar hole was as a Cliffy was installed when I bought the machine as well.

I'll be taking the time to clean, polish, and/or replace any worn or broken parts while the playfield is out and getting done by HSA. Some of the LED's are older as can be seen so I'll be updated to frosted and premiums where needed. I also plan to put in a LED ColorDMD while refreshing the machine. It has Jeff Thompson's lighted speaker panel mod with the CPR reflective plastic. It hasn't been shopped since I bought the machine and actually doesn't look too bad. Starting tonight, I've begun the project. Pictures will be following as progress moves along.

Quoted from Elicash:

Following - I am interested in doing this with my WH20, since Mirco is still OOS on their replacement playfields. Will HSA be doing any repairs, leveling inserts, etc, or just clear coat?

I'm with you. I'm waiting on the CV playfields from them! Yes, they'll be doing what they outline in the stage 2 process. I'm not worried about the Stage 3 as I'll be playing it:

Was able to finish up yesterday and ship the playfield out today. Not too many surprises found. A pop bumper ring/rod assembly had a broken stud and found a few loose screws other than the one behind the wheel. I made a list of the metal post sizes and locations and T nut counts. Will update that when I can but there's not many posts so it's not nearly as much of a PITA as TOTAN.

Quoted from Elicash:

This looks like a very nice playfield to begin with. Your snack bar hole looks to be in great shape. I almost bought a Creech recently but the hole was so blown out it was round rather than square.
Will you need to re-drill the screw holes after the HSA work is done? Or do they do that for you?

It really isn't bad at all. I want the protection of clear coat so getting it fixed while apart as well. I've seen many like that too and I guess why Cliffy makes an extended protector.

I'm not sure if they do or not but will likely still go over all the holes anyway so not to chip the clear. Better safe than sorry.

I forgot I had to put in a GLM board a few years ago for the hologram motor!

Quoted from robotron911:

When repairs like this are being done, has anyone had a Cliffy carefully routed into the snack bar hole so that it is level and then clearcoated over smooth? I know this may be overkill, but I think the hole would be bulletproof at that point.

That's a good question. I know I'll be going with a Mantis protector set to keep the holes from egging out: https://mantispinball.com/product/creature-from-the-black-lagoon-protector-set/

Quoted from fiberdude120:

I had a set of those on my CFTBL and they sucked. They made the hole to small and the snack bar shot would not go in most of the time. Changed it to a cliffy and all is well.

That's actually good yet unfortunate to know.

Good to know Gord. Thanks for sharing your pics and experience!

Quoted from fiberdude120:

Those look like they fit a lot better than mine did. Perhaps mine are an older version, all I know is mine were not that good of a fit. dmacy if you want them you can have them.

Thanks fiberdude120. Give them to someone that can use them locally. You're a great dude. I'll likely get a set from Kerry as I need to get other parts from him anyway. Maybe contact him too and let him know? I'm sure he'd want them to work properly.

HSA does great retouching work, they did my MB playfield and I could not be happier!

Awesome to hear!

I just got my playfield back from HSA. It looks fantastic. Reassembly will be in the next couple months after giving the clearcoat some time to cure.

Finally got some time to start getting this put back together. New rails from Taylor, new plastics, and all parts tumbled or replaced if needed. Installed Swinks Snack Bar mod; very nice piece. Lighting is done and most switches. More pics to follow.

Finally had a chance to make some small progress. Mostly done underside other than 3 coils to solder on. Flipper/mechs were forgotten to clean up so they're tumbling now. Mostly pics of in progress...

Yes, but so worth it right?! I'm getting close now and haven't been able to play this since early January. Hard to believe it's been 8 months and going...

Mostly ready finally. Should be able to get some testing done over the holiday weekend.

Quoted from RobKnapp:

Amazing . I bought my CFTBL back in 1998 . I always wondered if it was an import . How can I tell. Also how did you learn to do all this work. My technician will not do it I offered him good money he said no way. Any ways great job . It is interesting I changed the top PAID rollover plastic to Teal as well from the original orange . My Snack Bar inserts are Teal yours are blue. I put pink LED in the KISS inserts it look cool. I am jealous of your CFTBL .

Thanks. You can tell usually from the power supply to the right of the coin door inside. Also, the serial number should indicate an I before the numbers as well as a bunch of other give-always.

I learned from many on here that have been kind enough to share their knowledge and on my own. I'm no pro and it shows.

1998! That's awesome. Your machine was still kinda new. I thought I had mine a "long" time since I had for 6 years. Agree on the teal stuff. I think it goes better. I really should've went with real star posts but trying to keep it mostly the same as I had it. And yes, did the pink LED's in KISS inserts too. They're perfect for them.

Updated to show some of the parts i sent out for chrome sc93cobra and will get more pics of the finished machine I forgot to post. Now it’s apparent the lock down receiver needs a deep cleaning.
