Mine was doing the opposite and NOT stopping the ball, turns out that plastic on that side (common to be broken) was broken, had wiggled out of position and the gate had hung up on it, not allowing it to drop down. Scooted the plastic over, viola.
Have you pulled the playfield out and looked at it? Post a pic if you have - should be able to see it pretty good from the side -
