Hoping one of the tech whiz's can help with this. The left flipper on our CFTBL suddenly developed problems. It works, but is "jittery" almost vibrating. Also it will not allow you to hold or catch the ball. If you hold down the flipper button, it fires, but then immediately returns to the "down" position.

We're supposed to be hosting a pinball party next weekend, so I really want to get this fixed quickly. Any help appreciated!

Any ideas?

It's likely a broken hold winding, or a bad or broken diode that connects to it. Take a look at the copper winding on the flipper coil, the thinnest one is the hold winding.

I watched one of Clay's repair videos last week where a TZ machine had that weak "jittery" flipper issue and it was a bad optic switch.

edit: it was because the faulty optic switch outputs a weird voltage and confuses the fliptronics board

Throw the game into Test - Switch Edge Test

Hold down the flipper button

Does the switch stay closed stably or does it flutter?

Clean the U-shaped optos under the flipper button with a q-tip and alcohol

Same? Better?

Swap the flipper opto boards R to L and vice versa

Does the problem follow the board (swaps to other flipper)?

And that's why pinball is the best hobby in the world. Advice turned out to be solid. Switch test revealed abnormal behavior. Swapped flipper opto board to other side, and problem did not travel.

Inspected flipper coil closely and wiggled some things. Broken diode revealed itself. Out came the soldering iron, new diode went in. Problem solved. Did some preventive maintenance while I had the "hood up"...everything looks great for the party!

Thanks guys! You all rock!
