He should have liaised with the police while doing his research, but it was genuine (he kept notes that proved this), and he did publish a book. Pete Townshend was rightly found innocent IMO, but he behaved incredibly stupidly for sure, and it was only his wealth that enabled him to get justice (so often the case). I guess his wealth also made him feel he could do such things with impunity in the first place. Dumb.
