Hi guys! I have a CFTBL on the way should be here in another week or so. I'm going to read all the threads to learn all about it. I played one and was hooked! I'm wondering what are the "firsts" things I need to get for it. It's a virgin never touched for the most part. It's been in a home most of it's life and cleaned and waxed a few times. What are the "musts" I already have a ColorDMD for it. I'd like to do LED's on it and give it a full shop once I get it. It's in beautiful condition.
I'm not big into the "toys" for the PF figure a cliffy set for it will be needed as well. I haven't seen it in person but I'm told the hologram is still green with a touch of blue. How do I preserve that or can the LCD upgrade still be done? I'll be adding NVram as well. Can't wait to get it thanks for the input!

Also what are the area's that wear or show damage to look out for. I had some great high res pics of the PF but sometimes you miss things that may be a common issue so that input would be great as well! Thanks

Quoted from Billy16:

I can tell you the biggest single improvement you'll make is to put quality speakers and a powered sub on it. This pin responded the best of any of the pins I've upgraded with good speakers. I used FF's and have always had good luck with them. The lighted speaker panel mod and the video mod would be my next two choices, but both are unavailable right now.

Thanks! I have FF in my Met and they do sound great! So I guess I'll be buying another set. Who had the lighted speaker panel mod and video mod? Just so I can keep an eye out for them if they come back out.

Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

The snack bar mod made by swinks is a really really good upgrade - looks a million times better in the game and is just all class in terms of being well made and visually appealing.
There aren't a ton of great mods for the creature though - I added the drive-in movie sign mod which looks good from afar but IMO isn't very well made. You can add a shooter rod if you like..
Another huge improvement is adding the proper LEDs around the ramps. Makes the game pop even more than usual

By proper leds around the ramps, can you link me to the right ones? Thanks!

#1178 7 years ago

Excellent! Thanks for the tips! I guess I'll buy those LED's and the paint give them both a try see what flavor I like the best.

Creature is here! I'm always worried when I buy a pin without putting eyes on it personally but I got very lucky here! Wound up with a beautiful Creature that's been in a home for many years and had almost no wear at all on it. She is a beauty unmolested! Credit dot is time and date need to be set. Tiny bit of acid damage on the holder so I'm keeping the batteries out till NVRam goes in. I can't wait to give it the LED treatment! ColorDMD is going in tomorrow. NVRam will be next in line. Played a ton of games on it and it plays awesome. I'm in the club!

Mods I'd like to find,

The LCD display for under the playfield. If anyone has one let me know. My hologram is still pretty greeen with a touch of blue in it. But if I could upgrade to the LCD monitor that would be awesome.

The mod that lights up all the tail lights on the speaker panel plex. Is that one still around? Saw a video of that looked neat!

I'm sure I'll wind up with the snack bar mod as well.

And on to some pics!

very nice creech, if you are after a snackbar mod - just a heads up I am only doing 12 more then taking a break from them for a while to do a few GB mods

Put me in the que then!

Quoted from GRB1959:

Hi PhillyArcade,
You may want to pick up a new backbox light baffle for your CFTBL from Pinball Life.
http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=3901
The original part gets very yellowed and brittle over time and is prone to breaking/cracking. The replacement part from PBL is a huge improvement over the original part.
Gord

Thanks added to my already huge wish list with them! lol I was chaning out the lamps with some LED's last night just to see how purple looked there and I was thinking man this thing is like ready to turn to dust on me!

Installed NVram on my Creech tonight. No more batteries for 30 plus years! This is the first one I've ever had with no acid damage somewhere! Someone, someday, will thank me!

Quoted from PeterG:

How does that work, simple plug and play? And it does save the highscore but also date and time?

Well it requires some decent level of soldering skills and a good iron for sure. Takes a little time but on WMS games you need to remove the current ram, solder in a socket, and then just install the NVRam. I've done a bunch and I have a really good soldering station to use so it's maybe a half hour job for me taking my time. Plus I wind up flowing solder on all the connections on the board while it's out as well. This was my before picture.

Question, I was replacing the lamps around the ramp and bowl with the green led's from Comet and I have a few random ones that will not light. I tweaked the sockets a bit so the lamps fit securely and are making good contact still nothing. Didn't get the meter out yet but I was just curious, are these sockets known to fail? Simple Marco part? Looks like the solder is fine didn't seem like cold solder joints. If they are known to have bad sockets I'll just swap them out. Thanks!

Thanks for the replies guys I'll test some more! I had it in all lamp test mode when I was installing them. I even had the strips out.

Quoted from Pinrookie:

I had this issue before. If light sockets, LEDs and wires are O.K. This issue would be caused by a bad transistor on the light board. This light board is located under the playfield.
My issue was easy to identify because when I checked my light board I noticed one transistor was missing. Once I put a new transistor on it. All the LEDs light up like they should.

That's interesting! I'll take a look! Thanks!

#1245 7 years ago

Well as they say.. "that was easy" went to inspect that pcb under the PF and the connector on the board at J2 was almost all the way off. Even more easy then "just a fuse" Always nice to find something simple when you have an issue! They are all working again! Thanks again for the heads up!

Hey guys, I picked up this mod in Texas over the weekend. Don't have a clue what it is or how it works or what it hooks up to other than the obvious. Anyone have this? Has anyone hooked this up before? It looks all there. I'm sure I can figure it out but it would be awesome if someone has some installation instructions they could share with me. Thanks!

Quoted from swinks:

this is a movie poster mod.
I developed the initial idea / mod and j_m_ helped me with the programming. After much developing decided to can the project as I would of had to modify a 4dsystems screen which would of canned the warranty of the screen and wasn't happy in doing this. I had about 25-30 people on my list and sparky offered to help and do his version in which he kindly gave me a $10USD commission for each one sold limited to the 25-30 people. Sparky's design was a little different to mine as was a bigger screen in a different location but still a 4dsystem screen.
head to this link for my design and manual which has the program and I still have the files but it looks like you have the sd card in there so it should work. 5vdc to the screen and 12vdc to the el wire inverter
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/cftbl-creature-movie-poster-mod/page/3
and sparky's is here posted by someone else
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/cftbl-lcd-movie-poster-mod-installed#post-2988571
and go to the end of the second thread and there is a video by pinballsupernova who normally puts together a nice install video, step by step, and you should be right to go

Thanks for your reply's guys! Cool mod! I can't wait to hook it up. I'll post pics and videos and such. The guy at the Texas pinball festival I bought it from had no idea what it did. He had a ton of mods for games. I got it for $20 bucks so I thought I could not go wrong there! Thanks again all!

Quoted from swinks:

that's a bargain as pretty sure when new they were about $125USD

I thought it was kinda cheap for what it was! I'll get it hooked up and post up. Nice mod for sure!

Finally! Got around to installing my movie poster mod! I picked this up in Texas 2 years ago for $25 bucks. I'm not huge into toys and mods on a PF because most of the time they block the site of the ball and effect game play. Since this was so cheap and it looked like it mounted in a place that was already somewhat of a dead area and out of the way I gave it a shot. Well I really like what it adds to the playfield! Just scrolls through old movie posters. Pretty neat when the creature poster comes up it will say "now playing" and the others say other days of the week. Used 12 and 5 volts and the harness it came with I was'nt a fan of. So I made my own custom harness with molex connectors to remove it nice and easy if needed. The wires were really short and they just wanted you to drape it over the back of the PF. I snuck all the wires out of the flasher behind it and under the PF into the wire loom. I get a nice reflection off the mirror blades as well.

Well I did the full hologram package install tonight. Very smooth and easy. The only catch my 12 volts was like nope! So I got that external power supply with it and just tapped that into the service outlet. My hologram was blowing fuses so it was time. I used my original plastic window with the art work on it and looks great!

I made a few vids today and upload them on my youtube page (youtube upload turned 2 of them sideways on me) have a look here...

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbi2EhnPXUzvgbD1PZHDfWw

of course I played like shit while making the vids. I played a few games with no camera and kicked butt! Go figure! Either way great mod I love it and since my hologram was blowing fuses and I've had it unplugged for ever, this is refreshing for me!

Just from looking at the pictures, it looked to me as though it was intercepting the ribbon between the mpu and the powerboard so I assumed it was switch triggers, not audio.

Yes ALL switch triggered. It would be useless if it was audio triggered. He did his research and did it right.

Awesome video. Thank you. Can you please point me in the direction for the sound/music mod. That's awesome!!! Can't wait to install both...any heads up when trying to integrate both the sound/music and pinballsp video mod? Thanks!

The sound board is from PinSound https://www.pinsound.org/ another amazing mod. Some games I feel pinsound does not work to well with or could be a waste, but creech is 100% better with the pinsound card for sure.

Get those AA batteries off your creech!! I got my creech in 2017. The CPU was perfect. No signs of any battery leakage clean as they come. It had AA batteries on it and my first mod was to take those off and add NVRam back in 2017. I recently just got some switch errors. One on the snack bar and one out lane. So I though hmmm Took a look in the backbox and sure enough battery acid damage! At some point at some time they leaked just enough to maybe hide under a IC and just started to move around and get worse. So here I am pulling chips off and I had to replace all the molex connectors along with replace all the .100 molex connectors due to "I don't even know where it's hiding still!" Soaked the board in several tanks of vinegar and brushed with a tooth brush.
When I pick up a pin the first thing I do is look all over for any signs of acid leakage. I actually took pictures when I got my creech and it was perfect. So get those AA's off NOW! Even if you have an alarm to hit you over the head with a hammer to change the AA's in your game.. get them off. NVRam if your handy with an iron or at least do the button battery board that is super simple and anyone can do. I wouldn't even go down the AA lithium batteries only because it leaves the option for someone at sometime tossing regular AA's in there. Your PSA for the day!
