"Creative and original".
Playfield inversion would make the game virtually unplayable, not to mention completely fugly.
The current contrast with the original playfield makes it truly unique.

Chris that light board is just mind blowing fantastic!!!!!

#153 3 years ago
Quoted from pinster68:

I'll never look at my boring old light panels the same. Damn you Chris.

I can't believe in 2016 there remained such a large area of pinball real estate without decoration. I'm going to be a pioneer in cabinet bottom painting. Anyone have a car creeper I can borrow?

Aha! You can be a pioneer and beat Chris to the punch. Take that captain perfecto!

I concur with the others...stellar work going on in NC Chris. This Centaur is shaping up nicely.

#156 3 years ago

Damned if I didn't meet the couple this game belongs to at the Texas show. We just happened to be sitting at the same table during happy hour (I really didn't want to go but my friends dragged me there). Someone mentioned I restore games and they wanted to know if I knew Chris Hutchins. I said, ahhh, yeah. Whatever they texted you, Chris, don't believe them. I told them there's no one better to do what's being done to their game then you!!

Starting to build the lamp panel.
I had a ton of the black 555 sockets left over from many years of TZ 545 to 455 conversions.
This seems like a perfect use for them for several reasons so I will list a few.
First they grip and center perfectly in the holes.
Second they are solder free.
Third I can eliminate the bare wire and any potential shorts from it.

Last I did not have to do even a third of the stapling when using the shielded wire.
It isn't really a time saver but I like the overall quality of the set up better.

Any update Chris on this silver beauty?

Yes I am back at it after taking a break to get some other projects finished.
The lamp panel is built.
That was pretty time consuming because so much of the harness is tied in and all connectors with the exception of the displays needed to be rebuilt.

is that a full range flipper fidelity speaker? i bought a bunch of full range speakers from mcm but they sound terrible. I need a good quality replacement speaker for these old bally's and sterns. I'm doing a centaur right now. it's going to look great but not quite to this level. I will post a picture here so you can see the drastically different appearance from this one. another example of artistic freedom lol...

#164 3 years ago

Looking great Chris! With that custom lamp panel in place it almost doesn't need a back glass.

Is there a little avatar for rubbing my hands together in anxious anticipation for the next round of pictures?

7 digit LED Displays...I hope they are red ones.

How could anyone go wrong with 7 digit displays on a Bally game?

Yes red displays.
Can't decide if we should do standard bulbs or LEDs at this point.
The purist in me went out the window when I changed the color scheme so now I am thinking just keep going.

#167 3 years ago

Please do LEDs. I think it would need it after the customized everything else.

I have heard great things about the sunlight LEDs from Comet. Sure Art wouldn't mind having a conversation with you about them....either way, sure it will turn out great.

Arts Sunlight LEDs are awesome. Brighter than 44 incadesent but not as harsh as the natural white LEDs

#170 3 years ago

Just absolutely beautiful, the artwork on this machine kicks ass in any color from the looks of it! NICE!

#171 3 years ago

You could do a mix of LEDs and incandescents like NicoVolta did on his EMs.

Thanks for the link I just ordered a bulk of these and will use the also refrenced guide from Nico to find some type of happy medium of enhancement without being blinded.

Tilt panel built.
Doesn't look like much but it takes time to Polish and rewire everything.
I like to put this on a plug and make it more of an assembly to clean up the cabinet wiring.

This:

great idea from comet but if you want a clean look and don't want all that stuff under your plastics you need to desolder it from the pad and toss it in the trash. Then hardwire it with some good .22 gauge solid copper phone wire.

#189 3 years ago

Awesome Job. Cabinet really looks great in those different colours. Can't wait to see this finished and how it plays & sounds. New S&T sound board in the assembly queue for this game

Quoted from applejuice:

What do you mean "how it plays"? You don't put balls in a machine like this ... you place it in a museum for people to appreciate for years! Just kidding!!!!!! Pins were made to be played, no matter how pretty they look.

#191 3 years ago

I can personally guarantee that this one will get played. A lot!

Working on the replacement playfield.
It is a first run CPR and it is ok overall but needs some tweaks.
My preference on these playfields with the insert rollovers is to only sand and polish if the applied clear is good.
That is because the rollover inserts are usually gummed up and non functional to begin with and additional clear only makes it worse.
In this case it wasn't possible so rework and clear is needed.
Main concern with this playfield was pits/fish eyes on some inserts. All others are a bit sunken which isn't that big a deal but worth addressing in the process.

Playfield is sanded as much as possible without cutting through in order to reduce the surface thickness as much as possible.

Playfield is cleaned and prepped. Rollover inserts are masked to minimize clear build up during the application.

Playfield is cleared. The insert rollovers are only unmasked and barely misted after the final application just to bridge them back in and regloss.

I would remove or replace the coin door decal. It looks great, but no way does Midway get mentioned with this Classic Bally masterpiece! Just my opinion of course...

I kinda dig that matte look in this stage. Really fits the artwork/theme well.

Nice, and that was close to my next project but not white. I had not seen this post because I was moving from California to Tennessee and involved in that task.

I have mentioned this before over on Rec Games Pinball about the white cabinet I got to see in 1983 at Bally. I was there for service school and since I was a regular I got special privileges from time to time. One night I was staying late to hang with the guys in tech service and I was asked, "would you like to see something". Knowing these guys you never said yes automatically. I was taken to the back of the plant and under some sheets was a white version of the game very similar to what is being done here but it was stock except for the cabinet colors. The only difference is there was gold in the mix as was black and red. It looked really cool. I asked if there was going to be two colors and was told, no. It was done for someone that wanted it that way. That game disappeared. I asked Pat about it at Expo 2004 and he just stared at me, put his hand on my shoulder squeezed it and said, "it didn't exist, OK". I said OK.

I have a boxed black cabinet and playfield and this really makes me want to get to it.
