The plan:

1. restore original cabinet, re-stencil
2. keep original back glass
3. powder coat legs, misc parts
4. polish or re-plate metal parts
5. playfield swap with new CPR playfield
6. clean the crap out of everything
7. install new rings, pop bumpers parts, targets, flipper buttons, posts, plastic set, new displays

#4 9 years ago

8. sell and ship to GUMBO

That's one of the best "base" Centaurs I've ever seen, other than the cabinet dings, I'd say it was in very good shape. Keep the pics coming!

Your original playfield looks to be in very good shape. Expect there would be some that would like to buy it. I too have a CPR playfield for mine, but my original is showing wood and the black to white contrast is bad... really it's the white that is now cream. Not sure if you were planning to but, new aluminum sheet in the back box is a nice touch to. Did it to my KISS...

Why would you touch this pin? It looks *extremely* nice as-is, definitely better than the vast majority. Was it original? That looks like it was either taken care of really well or someone else cleaned it up very nicely recently. Complete disassembly hardly seems necessary and will probably only introduce new problems.

Next time you decide to sand something down to the wood and swap everything out "just because", pick up a thrashed machine. This makes me sad.

#15 9 years ago

Yeah, it was a tough call. I wanted to keep the cabinet as is but there were dings and deep grooves all over the place. Which would have been fine if it just in the black area but it was through the art. I don't quite have the skills to replicate a partial/masked off stencil area that would have the same overspray look. And its tough to preserve the wood grain after bondo/sanding a section smooth. Plus i'd have to perfectly match the original paint which is another challenge because of age, sun fade, tint, etc. The new stencil paint job will be completely consistent throughout.

It is very nice compared to a lot of originals yes, but the whites are cigarette smoky yellow instead of pure white like the CPR playfields. Of course if anyone wants the old playfield they are welcome to buy it. Thanks for the heads up on the aluminum sheet, i'll look into it.

Looking good, going to be beautiful when you're done. It's your machine, and you're taking great care of it. And there's going to be a decent playfield available for someone if they want it.

If you chopped it up into a coffee table or some other bullshit that would suck. But restoring it? That's great. Centaur is a game that deserves to be seen shining with crisp black and white art. I'm gonna be jealous of it when you're done!

#25 9 years ago

Thanks Aurich, yeah the original playfield is in decent shape but it pales in comparison to the new ones. The mylar preserved most of the inserts which is a plus. Its interesting how under a lot of the red plastic posts it turned the playfield pink.

I got the stencils in today so next week the cabinet is going to look sweet

The old PF, (ignore the painters tape, was using them to keep notes)

Personally, I wouldn't have considered a restoration with such a nice original cabinet and playfield, but I think I mind that stuff less than most.

I'm looking forward to seeing that CPR playfield installed. The new playfields do really pop; pictures don't do them justice.

Hard to match silver. If that was gouged you're almost forced to repaint all of it. Touch ups could really stand out.

#30 9 years ago

Yep, that was a major factor in deciding to go this route. Now the shiny new playfield will have a shiny new cabinet to match. At least i hope so

Soooooo, i order 40 1-1/8" concentric fin RED posts from Marco Specialties.

Only the "RED" is bright candy apple red and not the dark blood red like whats on the game now.

Guess i'm sticking with the original posts. Oh and 2 of mine are ORANGE for some reason, anybody got a couple dark red ones i can buy?

Steve Young at pinball resource. Has perfect posts and other Bally parts vs. the others. I have restored 100's of classic games and I only go with Steve because of his meticulous care for as per original parts.

Meet PACMAN. He cares more about the attention than the machines he "restores". Get used to it. He will never leave well enough alone. He has left quite a wake of classic arcade game cabinets in his path when he built new cabs from scratch and then gutted the old cabinets, cabs that were in collector quality condition. If you are on the KLOV forums then this is old news to you.
