I have a ‘66 Chicago Coin Hula Hula (2 player) that is exhibiting issues with the player unit. After starting a new single player game, the first ball will play and score under Player 1. However, balls 2-5 will randomly be played and scored under either Player 1 or Player 2. There does not seem to be any noticeable pattern. Additionally, sometimes the ball count will not advance to the next ball after it was played. If I start a 2 Player game, the symptoms are the same.

The ball count and player unit step up and reset okay manually. They also seem to step up and reset okay during game play as long as they are getting the signal to do so, which does not appear to be consistently happening.

I have a schematic. Any ideas on typical causes?

I'll need to see a high quality scan of the schematic from (for example) Staples ($2) or Kinkos ($6).

I'd check the "Player Step Up Unit" to make sure its wiper is dead on the rivets
and not overlapping. I'm pretty sure your machine has a Player Unit and not an
on off Player Up Relay..
I kinda have an eye out for a Hula Hula. If you ever may like to make a possible
trade, I'd have interest..

On steppers, from Clay's superb guide: http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index2.htm#steps

This is the best I can do until I can get a good quality scan.

From what I can tell, the Player Control relay controls whether the Player Unit steps up to Player 2 or stays on Player 1 through the Player Control make/break switch. For the Player Unit to stay on Player 1, the Player Control relay must stay pulled in.

I have cleaned all of the switches in the Player Control relay circuit. However, observing the Player Control relay during play shows that once the D4 motor switch breaks the circuit it doesn’t always relatch.

Trying to understand the theory of operation here which seems key to understanding what is going on that would cause the Player Unit to toggle. Any thoughts welcome.

Well, after sleeping on it, I decided to take another look at the D-4 and E-1 Motor switches which break the Player Control circuit and Outhole Relay circuits respectively. I found that the Player Control relay was only latching on 1/3rd of the motor cycle which told me that it wasn’t getting consistent contact pressure throughout the entire cycle since both switches appeared to be opening and closing properly and were clean.

After adjusting motor switch D4 with a bit more tension, the game now properly cycles the Player Unit on both 1 and 2 players. The same with the ball count.

Persistence is key!

I think I read somewhere that if you’re looking for a CC pinball, that this is the one to get and I couldn’t agree more. Here are some photos I posted over in the CC club thread.

I actually like Sound Stage and Hollywood also, but those 60s C.C. were built like tanks. Same
as their Bowlers.
I'm not sure I'll have the Paradise set up, but the Pleasure Isle for sure, and now that I know Hula
Hula came in AAB also, I have an eye out more so for that version, but I'd trade a decent Wedge Head
for either. At least the Replay version has a "Shoot Again" which is a plus for any multiple player pin..
Being in Upstate N.Y., I'd say there's a chance an AAB version may be out there..

It sure is. I've been working on a Moon Shot for about a month now, just off and on, here and there. When the thing came in it seemed to be working fine, but the owner said he wasn't sure if multiplayer was working, well, it wasn't because the player unit stepper unit was seized.... which was fine, if you only wanted to play a 1 player game.

So I freed up the coin unit, and the player unit, and now the game plays well, however, I start getting the exact same problem you're talking about! Sometimes it starts on player 2 ball 1... sometimes I get a two player game playing on other players, etc. and it's all because of the player control relay. what a strange setup.

So anyways, I had been through every single thing regarding this, every switch over and over again, and then I decided to search and found this post. Sure enough, after looking at D-4 I can see what you're saying, it wobbles slightly because of that damn Chicago Coin nylon score cam.

I had already adjusted it, but i banged that thing on there super tight and filed the contacts a little bit more so that it's bright and shiny, very closely gapped, and it fixed the problem.

Basically that ball once it leaves the outhole, it's all timed where it hits the trough switch while the motor is turning, and if any of that doesn't happen at the right speed or timing it will jump players because the Player Control Relay won't be pulled in at the right time. I guess what was happening in our case was it would pull in then fall out for a second, then pull back in because of that D-4 switch.

Thank you for your help and your post, it fixed my machine too!
