No, just a regular old kitten. I think it was the angle the photo was taken that makes his head look so big. LOL

He's a cutie though. We got him and his brother. They were the only 2 in the litter. We named them Calvin and Hobbes.

This is Hobbes:

My buddy Hobbes is in ICU. Had a severe urinary blockage . I feel like a bad cat parent because he seemed absolutely fine until last night. Poor guy. They put in a catheter and will get lots of fluids in him to flush out the bad stuff. Hopefully that will work and surgery won't be needed, or else I may have to sell a game.

Thank you again for your replies!

How’s Hobbes today?

Quoted from ToucanF16:

Wondering the same.

He is doing well. Just got back from visiting him. He was very alert, had lots of energy, and is eating quite a bit. Catheter is still in, and we're hoping that will be removed at some point tomorrow. They gave him a shot of anti inflammatory medicine to assist with his bladder healing. The vet tech that things are as expected. We'll know more tomorrow morning after the Dr updates us.

We appreciate you thinking of him

Hobbes came home today. His Catheter was removed Saturday morning, but we opted to keep him at the vet one more day until they were confident his urine was flowing freely. We brought him home this afternoon, and will be keeping a close eye on him to insure things are working properly.

That’s great news on Hobbes! When we brought Smokey home he was very cuddly for a few days, kept rubbing on us to get the scent of the vet off him!

Hobbes is a good looking cat. Glad he’s home.

Thanks for the well wishes! Hobbes is NOT getting along with his brother AT ALL. They really got into it tonight. It's like they never knew each other. More stresses. Keeping them separated and trying to do scent swaps to get them acclimated again.

#1720 5 years ago

Thank you for all of your concerns about Calvin and Hobbes.

After 5 days, I can now say there is one again peace between the cats! Not sure how, but I am not complaining! tried having them together earlier this evening and Hobbes hissed and growled as he has been doing. Put Calvin in our bedroom to seperate them again. Feeding time came around, and I opened the door. Calvin came out of the room, Hobbes was laying by the door. Calvin walked over to him, sniffed his head, then his butt, meowed once, and all was right with the world. It was like a switch flipped.

Cats are weird! But it is certainly a stress lifted!

Quoted from SirScott:

Well, my buddy Pablo just got diagnosed with the same issue and is currently at the vet. He was perfectly fine yesterday, and then, BAM! Woke up today to him crying and hiding behind the couch--definitely not himself. I hope that he pulls through like Hobbes did!
[quoted image]

Oh no! I hope Pablo is back with you quickly! I can't say about the other's success with grain free food, but we use the prescription diet now which is what they were feeding Hobbes when he was in the vet. The way we figure it, if the vet was feeding him that, it should be the right thing to do.

Not denying that the other stuff is good and worked for those who used it, just trying to do everything to avoid a return trip. Plus they both seem to like it a while lot, so that's a bonus.

You can get the prescription stuff from Chewy.com for a little less than the vet sells it for (and wil free shipping and a discount if you're on auto ordering).

Please let us know how Pablo is doing!

Chris

#1761 5 years ago
Quoted from SirScott:

So, Pablo seems like he is somewhat back to normal. Vet says so--I still have some concerns, but I am more of a computer guy than a veterinarian.
Vet recommends Hills Prescription c/d. I'd rather this than the (astronomical) vet bill. Yikes!
Perhaps we can get Hobbes and Pablo together to compare notes.

We have Hills C/D as well, along with another brand (I forget the name at the moment). The vet had 3 different options and said we can interchange them, as long as they are the Urinary specific foods. I think Hobbes has gotten better. He's running around with his brother and seems even happier than he was before the incident. I am hoping that the dietary change will keep him problem free, as well as his brother. We feed them both the same food.

I hope Pablo is just as happy! Sounds like you caught it early, Hobbes was in the vet for 5 days.

We're wondering how Calvin is doing. Any updates

#1843 5 years ago
Quoted from Spyderturbo007:

He's getting better, but still not 100%. We had him back on Monday for another $500 in blood tests and they found that he had really low levels of Potassium, so they gave us yet another set of pills. He is now on 10 pills a day along with liquid twice a day. We are hoping that changes as his levels return to normal.
I'm sure you can all imagine how difficult it is to give a cat one pill, let alone 10. We'll know more in the weeks to come.
The vet maintains that he is in no pain and is just tired so we are going to continue the pill route for now, but as he regains his strength, it's becoming increasingly difficult to get him to take his pills. This would be so much easier if the little guy would just cooperate.
Thanks for asking about him.

Does Calvin have a Go Fund Me? I'd like to help out, albeit a little.

We had to put Calvin to sleep on Monday. Unfortunately I was out of the country at the time for work. He was continuing to lose weight, didn't want to eat unless you put treats right in front of him and was having issues getting to the litter box. Despite all of the medication and everything we tried to do, he just wasn't getting any better.
It was just time....

[quoted image]

I am so sorry to hear this. You did what needed to be done, no matter how difficult it must have been. I have been there, and it's never easy. I am sorry you couldn't be there in his final days, but just remember the good life you gave him while he was here. I truly believe that he knew it was time as well. The same thing happed with our old cat Pinot. You could see it in her face that she was ready.

Praying that you can get through this without too much grief. Let me know if you need someone to talk to. It's hard to lose a family member.

#1898 4 years ago
Quoted from Spyderturbo007:

Quick "Cat people" poll......Is it common to run into spraying
issues when bringing home a cat into a house with an existing cat,
assuming they are both fixed?
My wife and I have briefly discussed adopting a shelter kitty
(following the loss of Calvin), but I'm scared we'll run into
behavioral issues with our current cat Violet, or whatever new cat
we bring home. I'd prefer to adopt an older cat since I know that
kittens are very adoptable and older cats typically aren't as
desirable due to their age.
Anyway, my paranoia is that we'll bring home a new cat and one
or both of them start spraying and thereby ruining our house.
Just thought I'd ask for a few opinions / experiences.

I'd say it's possible. Not saying it would happen. Cats can have issues, even if they know each other. There was a point when Hobbes was at the vet for 5 days. When we brought him home, he and his brother Calvin could not be anywhere near each other. hissing, growling, and swatting at each other.

For us, the key was reintroduction. This took a solid 4 days. we kept one is a separate room (in our case, our bedroom) with the door closed. Each day, we switched which cat was in the room. This "blended" their scents and after the 4 days they were amicable again.

It's hard to say if this would work with your kitty, and not sure you want to go through the process of getting a new cat and having this not work. You could also get Pheromones, I think this helped our guys as well.

Best of luck, I know when we lost our last cat we wanted to get another quickly.

Well since we can't seem to have a cat without issues, I will share today's news. So it seems our Hobbes has diabetes. There had been an unusual amount of discharge in the past weeks. Took both the cats to the vet today (since we didn't know who was the culprit). Normal levels are 80-100 whatevers, and his was 455. So there's that. Unusual to have it in such a young cat (he's 3 1/2) but that's our luck.

Deciding if we want to go the insulin and shots 2x a day route, or possible enroll in a clinical trial the vet has available.

So keep Hobbes in your thoughts as we work through this. We have had a diabetic cat before, so that's not a problem. Just deciding which way to go with the treatment.

hobbes couch (resized).pnghobbes couch (resized).png
#2466 3 years ago
Quoted from jsf24:

I feel for you. We've had two male cats that for no apparent reason developed diabetes at separate times. We went the insulin route with both. It's not as bad as you might think. In fact after about a month of shots both cats would sit waiting for their shots. By the way after about 2 years both cats had their diabetes go into remission and no longer needed insulin so it's important to monitor blood levels frequently. The first cat Baxter lived 5 years in remission and passed of unrelated issues at 16. The other Angus has been in remission for 4 years and is 15.

Thanks, We have had a diabetic cat before, ubt never this young. Hobbes is only 3 1/2 so it's a little odd. We are looking into options and my get a second opinion on the whole thing before we start down any path.

Thanks for the info.

Sorry to hear this Chris, especially after all the urinary issues he had previously. He seems like a special cat--I'm sure you will provide him with the best care that you can. Please keep us updated.

Thanks. We have started insulin for Hobbes. We did get a second opinion from another vet we know personally, and he agreed that was the best course of action. It's been 4 days so far and it may be subliminal, but I see an improvement. He is less lethargic (I mean, he IS still a cat) and seems to have more energy.

They do, and honestly I had NEVER considered getting a black cat. No real reason, just never crossed my mind. Luckily Calvin is more affectionate with my wife, so she doesn't get jealous, LOL.

However, here's a shot of him making himself at home in mama's nice Browning range bag.. with Firepower and Solar Fire in the background, so it sort of qualifies as "cats and pinballs"

This is October, now affectionately called Babycat. She was about 6 weeks old when a child brought her into the pet supply store where my daughter worked. My daughter called and said "We have a situation. This kid brought in a feral kitten and she's injured. So after work, I'm taking her to an emergency vet."
Later that night, after she was patched up, I met this kittenfor the first time. It took all of 2 minutes before I knew this was now going to be my cat. She's about 10-11 months old now and is a fun little nut.
She played nice last night and let me take some cute photos on some of my pins.
[quoted image][quoted image]

She's adorable! Before we got a black cat, they were never on my radar. Not for any particular reason, but just whenever we looked for cats there were not any black cats. Until we got our Hobbes. By far he is the cat with the most personality of any I have owned.

Not a photo on a pinball machine, but I had to share. It's a bit of a long tale, but our Hobbes is lucky to still be here.

We were on vacation in Toronto, Canada. 8 hours from home. We have literally the BEST cat sitter ever. She is amazing, and can really handle anything. Hobbes is diabetic, and she is fully competent to give him his insulin shots, and/or any meds needed while we are away. 5 days into our 8 day trip we get a text from the sitter (I had missed her call) "Call me ASAP!" was the text.

Called her back and when she came to the house Hobbes was laying in front of the couch, in his own excrement, with his tongue hanging out. She did not see him breathing and said he was extremely cold. "I think he's gone" were her words. My heart sank as I heard it. We spoke a few minutes discussing what to do when she yelled "I think I saw him move!" - We had her take Hobbes to the vet we go to. Luckily they are close.

Once at the vet, they took him back immediately, doing CPR and inserting a line to get fluids into him. Michelle (the sitter) waited at the vet with him. 30 min later we got a call back from her (and the vet). Hobbes was still alive, and they determined that his blood sugar had gone too low. His level was unreadable when he got to the vet. They put him on a glucose drip and sedated him, and indicated the next few hours would be critical. Got another call 3 hours later stating that he had responded well to the glucose drip, and was far more alert and aware of his surroundings. The vet was "cautiously optomistic"

We decided to cut our trip short and come home the next day. When we did, we went to see him and he was doing well. the vet wanted to keep him one more night, give him some insulin and see how he responded. this went fairly well, and he was able to be released the following day. He is home now and doing well. He is more like himself every day.

Couple of interesting things as well. First is that the sitter came to check on them early that day. Usually she comes around 9 am and 8 pm because of her schedule, This day, when she picked her daughter up from school, her daughter wanted to "go see Calvin and Hobbes". So they did. If she had arrived at the normal time he would likely have died. Secondly, he was fine at 9 am when the sitter was there. This is how quickly things can change.

We're still not sure exactly what happened. Apparently cats can fall out of diabetes, and maybe he began a remission we were not aware of and because we kept his insulin levels the same it created an issue. The sitter was very upset and kept saying she didn't do anything differently. She loves these cats like her own, and I have no doubt this was nothing she did (or didn't do).

Well, if you held on this long, thanks! Hobbes is home and doing well. We have a checkup on Saturday and will have more course of action then. for now he is on a week long "insulin vacation" to see where his body stabilizes. I think he used one or 2 of his 9 lives. And we have the absolute best cat sitter ever.

Hug your pets

Never thought of the bones splintering as cats eat all that stuff in the wild but I guess it makes sense. Sorry you're going through it.

Quoted from Jwf_pinball:

My little idiot got himself wedged between the oil tank and the cellar wall for hours Sunday morning. Long vet day yesterday but he is home on bedrest and happy. No damage, just gonna be hobbling for a while.
Going to be a minute before he can sleep in his Slugfest.
Pray for some sense to be granted to him.
[quoted image]

Glad he is okay. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Quoted from Atari_Daze:

Old picture but posting to remember. This little kitty, Minnie, will be put to rest today. Her kidneys have failed her and she has stopped eating and drinking.
My youngest whom is in charge of her care, away at college, phoned today that he will take her this afternoon.
She was a gift from an old neighbor that we didn't need but happily took her in. She got along with everyone as this picture clearly illustrates.
We think it was around 2008 when we got her, she was one of the good ones.
Minnie, your fine feathered friend Murray will be waiting to meet you! [quoted image]

Sorry for the loss of Minnie. I'm sure you gave her a wonderful 15 years. She looked very content in that photo.

Supervisor Karolina checking in the new gameroom floor.

Ooooh, RaceDeck. Good stuff. We went with a similar product from the same company about 10 years ago and it really saved us when the basement got water a few times. Had to replace other stuff, but not the flooring. Was expensive up front but has paid for itself many times over and is pretty dang durable.

Hope Karolina likes it!

Some prayers for Karolina. Too much to type and not in the best space to explain. Tomorrow is going to be a good or very bad day.

Praying for Karolina. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Quoted from dmacy:

Thank you all! So not bad news. Not good news. No teeth issues as we were thinking that was it. Not eating much. Didn’t want to drink water. Very odd for her. Drooling, etc. The vet found some food that was jammed in her teeth and I’ve had that before. Even her cancer mass on her nose isn’t really pushing on anything. After settling down when she got home she seems better. Heather said she’s eating all her food and drinking water. There’s more details but don’t want to bore anyone…
Very thankful to come home and have her come downstairs to greet me!!!!

Glad to hear that she is eating and drinking. Praying that she continues to be well and give you many snuggles.

I was working in Elvira today and Calvin reminded me it was time to pet him. So I did. For like 8 seconds. Then he went back to his covert lookout spot to watch the world outside.

So cute when they vocalise. He seems very content getting used to the new order.

He LOVES to be up high, so the pinball machines he really likes. Unless they are on, then he scatters. I'll need to work on that
