I've always had a lot of cats around and have buried more than I can remember over the years. It is a sad occasion every time. Keep hopeful and give lots of love to Calvin. He looks a lot like one of my kitties.
I have a couple old girl cats on palliative care right now, they are 19 and 20 years old. They have amazing resilience sometimes and they came close to death for years now but they keep on ticking.

Regarding the GF and the cat. Here is a sign I have in my shop.
