On the subject of cats and Christmas... I was trying to make a Lionel video a few years ago...

And here's the clip that didn't make the final edit above...

She was a Pixiebob. They don't always come with tails. Lost her to kidney failure this past summer. We'll probably go cat shopping in January.

I'm feeling nostalgic tonight... Scruffy was a very docile cat and even willing to go on RV trips with us. So I made a little outdoor cat patio that hung from the RV's cargo hatch...

We went to the SPCA yesterday (just to look) and came home with Smokey. She's seven and solid grey with yellow eyes. And she's small like our old cat. Probably just 10 pounds if that. We put her in the bathroom which is home base with her food and litter box and everything else. We open about one door per day until she's seen the whole house. She's yet to meet the dog and pinball is many doors away.

Week 3: Smokey submits her application for assistance pin tech...

This is all going very well. Smokey is only my second cat. I really enjoyed our last cat, but was worried that maybe I just got lucky last time around. Smokey is proving to be just as engaging and lovable.

We've had two rescue cats and two rescue dogs. Only one cat and one dog at a time. They mostly ignore each other. We'd start by keeping them separated for a few days. Then we'd crate the dog for an hour and give the cat the run of the house. Then we'd crate the cat for an hour and give the dog the run of the house. After they seemed to loose interest in bugging each other we'd let them both out with supervision. Within a week or two all was well. Below is the one picture I ever got of an actual interaction. I think they were both already asleep and just rolled into each other.

Quoted from Phat_Jay:

A shelter should be able to recommend a cat or kitten that has been exposed to and socialized with dogs before. Cats are like people, some just like dogs and some don’t. But a shelter should kno who’s who. Ask the volunteers, they know more than staff in many cases as they give them snuggle time and may notice if the kitty is anxious around Fido.

Yes, there's often a note on the adoption ad about dog and kid compatibility. When we went to get our current rescue cat the shelter brought a dog into the cat room to see how our candidate would react.

Our cat discovered the suspended ceiling over the gameroom. She goes into the workshop, up on the shelves, up on the cabinets, up on the HVAC trunk, across the room, over the dividing wall and... she's gone. A few hours later she comes back covered in cobwebs. She is stubborn about her exploration. It's best to let her get it out of her system and then she'll move on to the next challenge.

Smokey likes napping in my lap. But part of her nap preparation process requires me to offer a hand to her outstretched paw...

Smokey isn't giving up. The ceiling is still fun land. As I type this I hear foot steps creaking overhead.

The cat found a mouse somewhere down in the basement. The cat brought the mouse upstairs to show the wife. Then the dog took an interest. The dog spooked the cat. The cat dropped the mouse. The mouse ran under and up into the couch. The mouse was never seen again. The wife is unhappy. The cat is back in the basement looking for a new mouse. The dog is asleep.
