Not the same thing, but my Ripley was a bit of an anxious maniac when we first got him; over-grooming, scratching us, etc. Our vet put him on 5 mg Fluoxetine daily, and it's calmed him down considerably. Basically, it's kitty Prozac.
Thanks for the replies! My vet did give me Gabapentin but I don't want to use sedatives unless I have to. I tried it and it calmed him down but it just makes him sleepy. So far, by controlling his skin itch and dandruff, it hasn't happened so I'm praying that's what it was. Spraying him with Burts Bees dander spray and his dandruff is almost gone. I ordered some omega 3 fish oil that I can mix with his food. Similar to adding salmon oil, which I've tried in the past and it really works. For those of you with cats with dry skin, you might want to try it, it's amazing for their skin and coat, makes it nice and shiny and healthy looking. I stopped because it was a little fattening but the pros outweigh the cons so I'm starting again.

Haven't tried this method before, but noticed years ago while at the compounding pharmacy that these are a thing: https://bcpvetpharm.com/products/bcp-vetchews - might just be available for Rx stuff, dunno about regular antihistamine and other otc products. Even so, a good product to know about if you have pets that just won't take their meds any other way.

So a quick followup. For the past few weeks I've been giving him omega fish oil supplements once a day mixed in with his food. Then twice a day I spray him good with Burts Bee's dander reducing spray. His dandruff is gone and so is his itchiness and he hasn't had any more strange episodes of behavior. And here I was bringing him to the vet for blood tests and setting up appointments with neurologists etc thinking is was feline hyperesthesia. So for all you cat owners, if your cat has dandruff, try to keep this in mind!

plus 2 outdoor feral cats she feeds regularly.
She says she will not adopt anymore, but at times threatens
that if she found a kitten on the side of the road (like your wife)
she will bring it home.
I love cats but 9+ cats get to be quite the chore,
add on top of that, one cat is getting senile at age 19 yrs (& pees outside the box at times)
plus we have a dachshund that is 17yrs old
that can hardly walk, and is deaf and blind.

So here is the thing, ever since we were together, our pets ALWAYS like me best.
It started with the toy poodle she brought to the relationship to the next dog she found at the school she was teaching at during her first job after graduation.
Then there was the bird we had for a few years, many cats in between, the greyhounds we used to foster, even "her" dog now. They ALL have always ended up "my" animals. So lately as our outdoor cat numbers have dwindled she has been "threatening" to bring home a cat to be "hers". Yesterday was that day.
I give it six months for the little tyke to grow up a bit, then we will see with whom he ends up taking a liking to.
He sure is a vocal critter, I figure he is still looking for his mom and siblings. He's found a good home though.
I think my wife has finally come to the conclusion that we do not need any more animals,
As we are less physically able to take care of them all.
My wife in particular has hip arthritis problem and can hardly walk or bend over without severe pain.
She is scheduled to talk with a doctor about hip replacement.
As I have stated previously, it seems all I do all day is cleaning up after the animals,
cleaning litter boxes, cleaning up pees and poos outside the box
(our doxie too, is at that stage in life where he sometimes does not make it to the door to do his business outside.)
and we are forever vacuuming up dust bunnies from all the cat fur & dander shed all over the place.
Climbing up and down stairs to clean boxes and resupply feeding and water stations is how I get my exercise.
Our weekly trash bin weighs a ton when i haul it to the curb, from all the cat litter deposits.
I am constantly on the look out for sales on cat litter,
which has gone up in price a lot the past couple of years beyond normal inflation,
at least the brand I prefer.
We love our animals and get great pleasure from them and they are all spoiled rotten,
but enough is enough.
Some of the younger cats will probably out live us both.
Sorry for the rant.

We are about at that point. Though he does not appear to be suffering .
He still has a very good appetite. He basically lives to eat.
He sleeps/naps most of the day, except at mealtime or when we take him out to Pee & Poo.
He can no longer climb stairs/steps that is why we now have ramp on the front porch.
A lot of his mobility issues relate to our slick hardwood floors,
when Dewey dog is on carpet or the lawn he moves about fine, slow but fine,
but on the hardwood flooring his rear feet get no grip and tend to slip out from under him.
He is at his worst when first getting up from bed, like his hind legs are asleep,
but after some massaging, he becomes more mobile.
Also Rimadyl pills tend to help with his mobility.
He gets around fairly well despite his cataracts and deafness,
(maybe he just refuses to listen to us anymore)
relying more on the nose to guide him.
When he has lost his appetite and/or no longer able to get around on his own, even with our help,
We will make that hard decision to ease his suffering,
but in meantime we will continue to see to his needs and pick up after his accidents.
We will all miss him when that time comes, including his cat brothers and sisters.

We have bought non slip tube socks for infants to use on Dewey
to see if that helped with his hind feet sliding out from under him.
And they do help, but problem is keeping them on and from coming off.
I just bought a life jacket vest with 2 handles to help with me carrying him outside to do his business.
Actually designed for dog swimming, but I am hoping it will more easily allow me to pick him up,
less likely to accidently twist his back or my back, as it often takes too long to coax him outside to pee/poo,
and that leads to accidents on the way to the door.
We basically take him out every 90-120 minutes now, to help prevent accidents.
Sorry for taking up space on this forum topic (for cats) with my dog problems,
but Dewey thinks he is a cat some times, his best buddy Jack (19yr old cat)
regularly tries to hump him
and Dewey at times gets frisky with one of our other cats (Tippy)
and when he was a pup he was litter box trained,
now he is too old and can no longer hop in and out of the box easily.
