Quoted from Spyderturbo007:Thanks for the suggestion, but we tried the pill pockets and the little bugger wants nothing to do with them. He also won't eat wet food or baby food. We bought about 10 different kinds of wet food and he snubs his nose at all of them.
I've reached out to my vet to see about either making a liquid or being able to complex a few of these together to lower the sheer number of pills.I appreciate the thought and that is very nice of you, but isn't necessary. It's a strain on our savings account, but manageable depending on how many weeks in a row we have to shell out $460 for blood work.
No worries. Am I sure.....not 100%. All I can do is consider the information provided by our specialist. My biggest concern was if he was in pain. When I asked the vet that question, his immediate response was "Not at all. He just feels like a tired old man". I then asked if any of the medication or the possible resulting kidney failure from the medication would cause pain. His response was "No".
The next question was a point blank "Being an impartial, not emotionally invested expert, what would you do?". To which he replied "There isn't any reason not to treat".
According to the vet, congestive heart failure is treatable and he could go on to live for years to come. On the other hand, he might not respond to treatment or his kidneys could fail and we face the alternative. He also mentioned that sometimes its overwhelming trying to medicate a cat. Dogs are apparently easy, whereas some cats won't take a pill no matter how hard you try. He recommended that we try and if it becomes too stressful for Calvin then we go with the alternative.
We decided, based on his expertise, that we would try treatment and see what happens.
Both of us are 100% considering his welfare before ours. Thanks for all the recommendations. We are definitely trying to find what is easiest for everyone involved. Some of the pills are small and pretty easy to hide, but others are huge and have to be cut in half. They are bigger than the treats.
Try putting the pills in some deli oven roasted turkey sandwich meat or turkey hot dog pieces.
