Try putting the pills in some deli oven roasted turkey sandwich meat or turkey hot dog pieces.

Had to start pilling my tabby for thyroid problems and it's changed his behavior. I wish there was another way to get treatment to cats. Food helps some but not with all pill types. He now runs from me when it's pill time. Also is timid about coming up for pets or when it's time to come in from the patio. It's not hard to pill him just he's fearful of getting picked up cause he knows whats coming.

Our vet used Roadrunner Pharmacy to compound drugs for us and to get them in liquid form. It won't be available for all things but could cut the amount of pills. Liquids are way easier to administer to cats.

If he's hyperthyroid they have a Iodine-131 Therapy treatment that has a high success rate.

We had to put Calvin to sleep on Monday. Unfortunately I was out of the country at the time for work. He was continuing to lose weight, didn't want to eat unless you put treats right in front of him and was having issues getting to the litter box. Despite all of the medication and everything we tried to do, he just wasn't getting any better.

It was just time....

I am so sorry to hear this. You did what needed to be done, no matter how difficult it must have been. I have been there, and it's never easy. I am sorry you couldn't be there in his final days, but just remember the good life you gave him while he was here. I truly believe that he knew it was time as well. The same thing happed with our old cat Pinot. You could see it in her face that she was ready.

Praying that you can get through this without too much grief. Let me know if you need someone to talk to. It's hard to lose a family member.

So Sorry to hear about Calvin, he had a very expressive face. I've been a cat lover/owner since forever and had to put many of them down over the years when the time came. It's such a difficult thing to do, playing god, knowing when the right time is, missing them so badly, they are so innocent and loving it's hard to let go. My heart is with you and your family.

Thank you to everyone for your support and thoughts. It's been rough. Nothing like sitting in a hotel room in Malaysia crying at 3:30am because you lost one of your furkids.

My wife can't even go into the room where his favorite cat house and his bed are.

I'm so sorry to hear about Calvin and such a sad and hard thing to have to put down a beloved pet.

We recently had to make the very painful decision to let our 20 year old cat go. Our son who is 20, myself and wife all cried a lot. First time I had seen my son cry and not try to deny it or hid it in a long time.

Sorry to hear about Calvin. It's a Very hard thing to do we've had to do it twice ourselves. We had a cat named Charlie who looked very similar to Calvin.

Quick "Cat people" poll......Is it common to run into spraying issues when bringing home a cat into a house with an existing cat, assuming they are both fixed?

My wife and I have briefly discussed adopting a shelter kitty (following the loss of Calvin), but I'm scared we'll run into behavioral issues with our current cat Violet, or whatever new cat we bring home. I'd prefer to adopt an older cat since I know that kittens are very adoptable and older cats typically aren't as desirable due to their age.

Anyway, my paranoia is that we'll bring home a new cat and one or both of them start spraying and thereby ruining our house.

Just thought I'd ask for a few opinions / experiences.

Fortunately / unfortunately I have experience with both outcomes... we have adopted multiple cats, male / female...some from shelters, some off the street. As I think upon it, only TWO of those would continue to mark territory, BOTH of them had been outdoor cats for sometime before we took them in, got their shots, removed their "kittyhood". Only those felines were the ones marking, our other cats whom came to us from shelters did NOT spray. I'll be eager to see what others say, I have room for one more but am hesitant for the reasons listed above!

I'd say it's possible. Not saying it would happen. Cats can have issues, even if they know each other. There was a point when Hobbes was at the vet for 5 days. When we brought him home, he and his brother Calvin could not be anywhere near each other. hissing, growling, and swatting at each other.

For us, the key was reintroduction. This took a solid 4 days. we kept one is a separate room (in our case, our bedroom) with the door closed. Each day, we switched which cat was in the room. This "blended" their scents and after the 4 days they were amicable again.

It's hard to say if this would work with your kitty, and not sure you want to go through the process of getting a new cat and having this not work. You could also get Pheromones, I think this helped our guys as well.

Best of luck, I know when we lost our last cat we wanted to get another quickly.

HELL yes. Cats may be the nicest animals in the world to their humans, but turn into fire-spitting, lava-pissing hellbeasts when there’s another cat around. If they are freaked out (and many will be if they are older), they will mark everything that is important to them (and then they’ll mark the stuff that’s not important). Introduce them SLOWLY, don’t just stick them in a room together.

Lock the new one in a guest bedroom (not a closet!) for a couple of days. Feed it in there, put the litter box far from the food but still in the same room.

The other cat will
Hear it moving around and whatever, and eventually will acclimate. But you need to be around them every second they are together.
If they’re freaking out, you can play with one or both of them and usually one or the other Will get distracted. You want to distract the more aggressive (fearful) one, which will probably be your existing cat.

Should be a couple of days then it will be cool.

We learned almost everything we know from watching" My Cat From Hell" on Animal Planet. Go to "Jackson Galaxy's" website and he will tell you everything you need to know. As long as you introduce them to each other slowly, put new one in a room for few days you shouldn't have any problems. Especially if both cats are fixed.
