Everytime I see new posts on this thread I'm reminded about the saying "dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Btw, I'm a little thirsty. Could you bring me some water?

Can everyone keep my oldest cat Calvin in their thoughts / prayers? We just got back from a 4h visit to the vet for blood work, imaging, etc. He stopped eating and has an enlarged heart and huge fluid buildup in his colon.

The vet says we can medicate him at home for the next ~18h, but if things don’t turn around, he’ll need to be hospitalized. He’s almost 17 and I’m not sure if he can handle being hospitalized.

Thanks!

So sorry to hear. Sounds like its his time.
You don't want him to suffer.

Nor do his mother and I. Calvin is her cat, so I'm trying to remove the emotional aspect as much as possible. From taking to the vet extensively, the heart may or may not be an issue. She said we have no idea how long it's been that way, or if it might even be normal for him. He's never had imaging done. She told us that he could outlive us all, or pass away in his sleep tomorrow.

She was concerned about his dilated colon and him not eating. If we can figure out the colon, I think things will be fine.

The next few days are going to be difficult regardless of the decision.

Prayers going out for you and family and Calvin.
Our oldest cat, Jack is also 17;
and my wife thinks this may be our last year with him.
I am hopefully he has got a few more years left.

#1815 4 years ago

I've always had a lot of cats around and have buried more than I can remember over the years. It is a sad occasion every time. Keep hopeful and give lots of love to Calvin. He looks a lot like one of my kitties.
I have a couple old girl cats on palliative care right now, they are 19 and 20 years old. They have amazing resilience sometimes and they came close to death for years now but they keep on ticking.

Just an update for anyone that cares. Today we took him to a specialist for an ultrasound and echocardiogram. The specialist said Calvin has congestive heart failure. After discussing all options with the specialist, we have decided to try treatment and see how he responds. He told us that Calvin is in no pain which was my big concern.

According to him, some cats respond really well and their kidneys can handle the medication and other cats don't respond or go into kidney failure. If he doesn't respond to the medication, then we only have one alternative.

The colon was a secondary concern and one that he feels will resolve itself as we move forward with treatment. He's on a battery of medication right now, so we'll see what happens.

Please continue to keep him in your thoughts. Thanks fellow Pinsiders!

That’s awesome . Our guy Lucky was diagnosed with a major thyroid condition, and after 2 full rounds of radiation treatment, it still recurred. Poor guy had an enlarged heart and it just wasn’t cutting it. Congestive heart failure sounds horrible but Is at least treatable. Here’s to Calvin!

#1819 4 years ago

Looking at Calvin's picture you can see he has a beautiful soul. They are extremely resilient, I hope he manages to pull through all this. When any animal stops eating it needs to be taken serious. I had a cat with a inoperable tumor in her head and she stopped eating one day. I did a YouTube search and found a vet who showed how to put the cat food in a blender and then into a big basting syringe. Holding the cat in my arms she allowed me to squirt the food into her mouth. She lived for another 4 years with me feeding her like this 3 times a day. I wish Calvin and your family the best, my prayers are with you.

It does seem like the late teens are the tough years for well taken care of kitties. We had cats when I was growing up (my parents still do) and it was always a struggle when they got to that age. Best wishes for your furry owner.

We're wondering how Calvin is doing. Any updates

We're wondering how Calvin is doing. Any updates

He's getting better, but still not 100%. We had him back on Monday for another $500 in blood tests and they found that he had really low levels of Potassium, so they gave us yet another set of pills. He is now on 10 pills a day along with liquid twice a day. We are hoping that changes as his levels return to normal.

I'm sure you can all imagine how difficult it is to give a cat one pill, let alone 10. We'll know more in the weeks to come.

The vet maintains that he is in no pain and is just tired so we are going to continue the pill route for now, but as he regains his strength, it's becoming increasingly difficult to get him to take his pills. This would be so much easier if the little guy would just cooperate.

Thanks for asking about him.

I'm sure you already know about pill pockets, sometimes they help, some cats don't go for it. If you only have 1 cat and they don't eat each others food, sometimes you can chop up the pills into the food. Many times they make liquid versions of the meds. I had good luck cradling them in my arms, forcing the mouth open and sort of throwing it into their mouth. Vet probably told you all this but just in case. Good Luck, we're all rooting for him!

We bought some soft kitty treats and cut pills in half and stuff a half in each treat. It worked for stormy, but cat has to be hungry.

It is so much easier with liquid medicine so you can tilt the cats head back and syringe it into the back of their mouth.

#1847 4 years ago

Try using baby food. Gerber 2nd stage turkey in the microwave for seven seconds, about a teaspoon, mixed in with the medicine is what worked for our male.

The best way to give a cat a pill is grab it by the scruff of the neck ,open his mouth and pop it in the middle of his throat. Then rub under his neck and it will go down. I've had a lot a practice. Believe me. And you won't get scratched. Getting it in the middle of his throat is the hard part but after a while it will get easy.

Thanks for the suggestion, but we tried the pill pockets and the little bugger wants nothing to do with them. He also won't eat wet food or baby food. We bought about 10 different kinds of wet food and he snubs his nose at all of them.

I've reached out to my vet to see about either making a liquid or being able to complex a few of these together to lower the sheer number of pills.

Quoted from SilverUnicorn:

Does Calvin have a Go Fund Me? I'd like to help out, albeit a little.

I appreciate the thought and that is very nice of you, but isn't necessary. It's a strain on our savings account, but manageable depending on how many weeks in a row we have to shell out $460 for blood work.

Quoted from mollyspub:

Please don't take this the wrong way but...are you sure your doing the right thing for him and not you ?
I know how hard and upsetting it is to let a loved pet go. Maybe it's for the best.

No worries. Am I sure.....not 100%. All I can do is consider the information provided by our specialist. My biggest concern was if he was in pain. When I asked the vet that question, his immediate response was "Not at all. He just feels like a tired old man". I then asked if any of the medication or the possible resulting kidney failure from the medication would cause pain. His response was "No".

The next question was a point blank "Being an impartial, not emotionally invested expert, what would you do?". To which he replied "There isn't any reason not to treat".

According to the vet, congestive heart failure is treatable and he could go on to live for years to come. On the other hand, he might not respond to treatment or his kidneys could fail and we face the alternative. He also mentioned that sometimes its overwhelming trying to medicate a cat. Dogs are apparently easy, whereas some cats won't take a pill no matter how hard you try. He recommended that we try and if it becomes too stressful for Calvin then we go with the alternative.

We decided, based on his expertise, that we would try treatment and see what happens.

Both of us are 100% considering his welfare before ours.

Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

Thanks for all the recommendations. We are definitely trying to find what is easiest for everyone involved. Some of the pills are small and pretty easy to hide, but others are huge and have to be cut in half. They are bigger than the treats.
