I have a berber in my basement too. Its not as cool as arcade carpetting but its super durable. It took over 20 years before i got a pull in it and I was able to fix it easy. It lasted 4 kids tough treatment. My carpet is a bluish color with flecks of black. Its served us well.
Quoted from markp99:altan, I've had a Berber carpet in my basement for years. Love it. I find it very durable and comfy under bare feet; I put coasters under my pin's legs. The mottled pattern can help hide small spots nicely. Not concerned with spills in this location.
My electronics workbench is in this same area. The carpet nicely tolerates (aka hides) the small bits and pieces of insulation and trimmed wire ends, etc. Vacuuming not needed too often.
If you can get a 3M treatment, this could really help spill cleanup, if that's a concern.
