I'm redoing the basement in my new place and I'm going to put pins down there. My old place had a great space for a game room --- but I just used it "as-is" so never needed to make these decisions.

Now I need to pick out the carpet.

I'm not looking for carpet patterns recommendations, rather, I'm looking for the type of carpet that holds up well. For example:

    1) The pinball legs don't destroy it (from the weight)
    2) Sliding a pin a little doesn't destroy the carpet
    3) Rolling a pinball dolly is possible and doesn't destroy the carpet
    4) Carpet can withstand some spills (hey, people spill stuff)
    5) Carpet is still comfy to walk on in socks (or bare feet)

I want to have some knowledge or recommendation before I talk to the carpet guy (tomorrow). Nylon, Polyester, Olefin, etc.

And then there's the carpet pad.

    Anyone have insight to offer?

My old place had carpet that was very short --- my wife said it was some inexpensive builder carpet. It did work well for rolling the pinball dolly.

    I know, it's a super non-sexy question.

Heading to a carpet place today... will post what I learn, if anything.

altan, I've had a Berber carpet in my basement for years. Love it. I find it very durable and comfy under bare feet; I put coasters under my pin's legs. The mottled pattern can help hide small spots nicely. Not concerned with spills in this location.

My electronics workbench is in this same area. The carpet nicely tolerates (aka hides) the small bits and pieces of insulation and trimmed wire ends, etc. Vacuuming not needed too often.

If you can get a 3M treatment, this could really help spill cleanup, if that's a concern.

I have a berber in my basement too. Its not as cool as arcade carpetting but its super durable. It took over 20 years before i got a pull in it and I was able to fix it easy. It lasted 4 kids tough treatment. My carpet is a bluish color with flecks of black. Its served us well.

I put a commercial grade carpet glued down on basement slab with no padding. So I can slide and roll anything across it. Can get wet and easy clean up.

I got commercial grade carpet and did padding for sure; feels nice on the feet.
