Struggling with a Card Whiz I'm working on.

Coin switches and start button won't energize the start relay. If I energize by hand it appears to start up but the game over (Q) and first ball (U) relays remain active.

So far in my troubleshooting I found a bad solder joint on a switch on the hold (R) relay. I also found a switch that didn't go through the plastic latch correctly on the first ball (U) relay. Those have been corrected.

Check ax/bx relays?

Yes checked AX/BX relays. Game now reliably does start up sequence with the start button. Hold (R) relay energizes and then releases during start sequence. Game over and first ball still on after start sequence complete.

Quoted from CRWgxp:

Hold (R) relay energizes and then releases during start sequence

If the Hold (R) relay won't stay energized, Inspect and diagnose this circuit with Alligator clip jumper wires

Start sequence. Follow it thru.

I would highly suspect that lightbox anti-cheat switch as shown in HowardR's photo. S pulls in the R relay until S opens. Then R stays on through a switch on itself and the lightbox anti-cheat. If either of these switches are open, R will open when S does.

You can temporarily jumper this anti-cheat switch to verify, but after that, I often permanently solder a short jumper to it so I never have to deal with it again.
