Card Whiz Start Up Sequence (resized).jpg

I am Working on a Gottlieb Card Whiz. This my second EM and first Gottleb EM. So my learning curve is still a bit steep. My previous two questions were resolved from advice and help from MarkG and guard (thanks again guys). The 2C switch dog position and the P3E and P4e wiring were incorrect. Those now work, so onto the next issue. The First Ball Unit (U) will not de-energize when the Reset Control Relay (AX) energizes. The start up sequence is attached below.

What I am seeing:
Power on the pin.
• The U and Q relays energize and stay on.
Push the replay/start button:
• the Start Relay (S) energizes and the score motor begins run
• the Hold Relay energizes (R)
• the Tilt Hold Relay (H) energizes
• the S relay de-energizes
• Q de-energizes
• U stays energized.
• Score Reels reset to zero
• Score Motor continues to run.

If I manually de-energize the U relay
• the AX relay de-energizes
• the Score Motor stops.
The game is now at 1st ball first player. When I manually score, trip the out hole switch, and then the trough switch (P) the ball count advances to ball 2. I can repeat these steps through ball resulting in game over and match.

I have tried to follow the schematic and checking switches to the best of my current knowledge. Apparently I do not understand or am missing something (probably both). Any thought or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks, Phil

If the 1st Ball relay (U) won't release during startup, check these 6 switches. You might try putting slips of paper in them all.

In your original post you say

Quoted from BleacherBum:

The U and Q relays energize and stay on

In post #4 I'm hearing you say that U does not energize, even without any paper in the switches.

So I'm not sure what symptom you're working on.

Hi HowardR,

I was still working on the U not de-energizing when the AX relay energized. I attempted to perform the paper test on the switches you highlight and then share my results. Obviously I failed. I found the results to be confusing, but had hope they made more sense to someone else. Apologies for posting a confusing response to your suggestion.

I give you credit in helping solve this problem. I spent a fair amount of time studying the circuit you highlighted. The AX switch look OK. I could not see the 1B switch very well so I took off the 1C stack. 1B had a much wider gap than the other B switch so I narrowed the gap so the two switched match. This seems to have fixed the problem. The pin now will re-set, score, and the ball count advances. So thanks for focusing me on this circuit.

I will strive to less obtuse in future post when requesting help.

Phil
