Does anyone have the sales results for pin sales at today's auction?
Just a day away (May 9th).
I know many here are not big fans of Game Auctions but for some of us, they are a good chance to socialize and maybe pick up a gem or two (or unload a dud or two. ). I have nothing for sale but there is quite a line up of over 60 Pinball games this time (rumor has it, it may pass 70 pins by Saturday morning).
Apparently, a collector that focused on the late 70's early 80's finally decided it was time to let the collection go and there are 25 or so classic games from that era including but not limited to:
Haunted House
Black Hole
Devil's Dare
Flash Gordon (LED'd)
Xenon (new P/F installed)
Nitro Ground Shaker (don't see these every day).
Silverball Mania
Mata Hari (Very Clean, still has the old High Score Plaque on the BG from Tilt back in the 80's)
Gorgar
Black Knight LE
Meteor
Capt. Fantastic
Wizard
There is also a Chromed Black Knight (probably a Herb Fab Fan creation)
Not too much in the way of EMs this time around.
Big crowd this morning. Bodes well for the sellers but I will be amazed if we see any deals for buyers. If nothing else it'll be amusing to watch. Like watching a car race just for the wrecks
Looking forward to the results! 85 Pins seems huge to me! But in my town 1 pin at an auction would be a big deal

Low or high? They seem on the higher end for some of those titles once you add the 25%. But California is a funny place so I really don't know.

Quoted from cosmokramer:I only go for the freeplay..
I usually do the same. This auction must be a seasonal thing. Some times it's better to buy and sometimes it's better to sell.
Yeah, I thought everyone thought these auctions were outrageously priced.... Catching novice buyers....
Well I bought the elvis for 3100 plus the 18% buyers fee for a total of 3658.00. If you research here the median price of elvis is 4400. So I guess the pricing is not out of range as some think.
Quoted from vid1900:You guys keep wanting pinball to grow.
The more people in the hobby, the higher prices go.
Only if supply does not keep pace with the demand. Demand could grow, but an oversupply would cause a decrease in prices. Obviously that's an oversimplification in a collectibles market, but is still fundamentally at play even with old titles.
Quoted from cosmokramer:absolutely crazy prices...
Wow, now I'm glad I didn't go. That said I hope this doesn't mean the stupid high west coast prices are going higher.
Quoted from vid1900:You guys keep wanting pinball to grow.

This is true, but more people in the hobby also means more new pins being sold thus more variety+volume in the collector market. I bet you see people selling games at good prices to make room/money for Kiss and Hobbit.
Quoted from cosmokramer:motorshow 700
Are there reserves to meet at these auctions. I believe this exact same game sold for 2500 at the last auction.
Thanks for results. I think that captains auction is a sellers market.
It is fun to go and talk to players and meet new friends there. Didn't make it today.
wow, I guess a bunch of people got seriously ripped off. What joke. Some must have saw what prices were 3 years ago, and thought it's still the same. Guess they will have a surprise when they try to trade or sell.

Everything is worth what someone is willing to pay.
Quoted from HighProtein:Everything is worth what someone is willing to pay.
Yes.
Everything depends on condition. If these were mainly babied collector games it is not too too heinous. IF these were the auction ex-route projects of yesteryear, then yes these prices seem very crazy.
Surf champ for ~$1300? High I imagine, but if you want it are you going to wait for some other one to walk buy or just say "screw it, this one is coming home".
Quoted from HighProtein:Everything is worth what someone is willing to pay.
Exactly, seems funny that the prices paid at auction or ebay are always "way to high" and there is a group of people jumping on the band wagon that its a rip off, or these people are out of their minds!
But I bet these are the same people that when they sell their games, quote these values to potential buyers to justify their pricing. Different geographical regions have different pricing thresholds and other factors that need to be taken into account.
The facts are that 87 pins went across the auction block and one and only one did not meet reserve!
with buyers local and national, the market is the market supply and demand.
I for one welcome the fluctuations of the market, as it adds another aspect to this hobby, like the stock market when to buy and sell. I personally purchased two pins, and taking into consideration the exchange rate, buyers premium and shipping, these games came in under the local market pricing in my area. So I must be one of the nuts that got ripped off.

I was bidding on this..add another 8% sales tax..not so much
Def not babied machines and the flippers were out. I saw several machines that were listed on CL weeks earlier..just sayin
No one is saying every pin was a rip off, just that a lot of them were due to condition...the elvis price wasnt too bad but 3100 plus 25% if you were bidding on location seemed a bit high for an elvis that was unplayable due to flipper and switch issues( sure, an easy fix but not being able to play a game makes you unsure what else is needed to make it 100%)...the ac dc was routed but still in great shape, however with a hammer price of 3800 plus 25% puts you around 4750...why not just order a NIB from a distro and have a HUO with warranty and new pin smell for the same price (plus LEDs and swinging bell)...the cue ball wizard for 1450(+25%) was a beater, you could find a much nicer example for around.1200...2875 (after tax a fees) for a DE simpsons not working?!?
Quoted from asay:This is true, but more people in the hobby also means more new pins being sold thus more variety+volume in the collector market.
I'd take 90% lower prices over the 3 new "superhero" titles that come out each year, lol.
Depending on condition there might have been a couple of decent buys. 2300 for a PM + 25 percent? That is only 2850. Boston shows it at 3947 in the last 12 months.
For the most part, crazy, but then again most auctions are.
Quoted from HighProtein:Everything is worth what someone is willing to pay.
can't argue with that. I think some get caught up in the auction. I know I did at my first auction I actually bought something. Ended up with a nice TOM for $3100, + Hammer on top of that. One because I forgot about the hammer. I was like FAWWWWK!!!. at the time TOM's were only going for 2800-3000. Luckily it was a nice machine, clean and playing well, but still paid $400 over because of the auction. And ghost bidding, which pissed me off so bad I didn't buy anything from super auctions again.
One pair that stand out to me are Wizard and Amigo. Both closed at $900. The Wizard was actually very nice maybe a 9 playfield. However, when I was there, it was locked and out of credits and therefore, unplayable. The Amigo was up and playable and probably about a 9 or less playfield. It boggles my mind why an EM would go to auction and not be set on Freeplay???
This probably shows the "outsider" influence on prices. When the general public shows up, and can play a game and like it, they bid. When its broken, they stay away regardless of the look or title. Then, the better informed set the value.
A lot of the games were Factory Mylared so for the most part, had playfields in better than normal condition.
The $2200 Bally Playboy was purchased by a local online bidder, once he showed up to see what he bought, he didn't totally regret the purchase, but saw there was a lot that the photos can hide.
I left at 2AM and I think there were still 80 or so games to go in the "Barn". I believe the Captain set a few records yesterday for himself and staff (most pins, most lots, longest auction).
Quoted from kbliznick:Are there reserves to meet at these auctions. I believe this exact same game sold for 2500 at the last auction.
WWE had a reserve that wasn't met. I don't often see reserves not being met at the Captain's Auction.

Yes it was my motorshow I bought it last auction at 1900 plus fees .....had my fun with it and sold it for 700 in this auction ....it was working 100% .....someone got a deal .....
I usually don't go to the auctions anymore but I thought Id go check this one out. Was kinda interested in the Pinball Magic...the POTO was in amazing shape and I was almost interested in that, too...but I didn't get anything. Finally got to ply WWE tho....wow - not a surprise it couldn't hit the reserve....what a pile of garbage. Ooooph.
