Hello everyone. I have a captain fantastic that upon startup score reel 4 keeps continuously tries to reset itself. I’m new to em machines. Where should o start first. Have had the game for a couple of years, and this has happened before, but stopped after awhile. It doesn’t get a lot of play, so I’m thinking an adjustment or cleaning? Thanks,Joe

Most likely the zero switch on that score reel needs cleaning/adjusting. It’s not telling the score motor that it’s reached zero so just keeps trying.

Great. Thanks for the help. I will check it out

Okay so I tried to download a short video about what is happening in regards toy original post but no t won’t download for some reason, but the two relays on the right keep operating.the comment above said to check the zero switch. Where would that be located. Thanks, Joe

The switch you are looking for is located on the score unit itself, the one that keeps going around and around. If you look at the lower left area of the picture you posted, you can see a switch stack mounted just behind the plastic reel with the numbers on it. Look just to the right and below the upside-down "6" and you will see a small switch stack mounted to the top of the bracket that holds the drive coil onto the frame of the unit. That is the switch stack that contains the zero switch you need to check.

There are three switches on this stack. One is open all the time, and closes at the 9th position to cause a carry to the next higher score unit when going from 9 to 0 (but this switch may not be on the 10,000 unit). The other two switches are only open at 0 and are closed in all other positions. One of these shuts off the pulses to its own score unit when it gets to zero. The other one keeps the game in reset until all score units in the machine are back to zero.

It sounds like what is happening is that the zero switch for the running score unit is never opening, so it just keeps going around and doesn't stop at zero. This could keep the game in reset forever. Also, if the other switch that is supposed to open at zero never opens, that would also keep the game in reset even if all score units return to zero and are no longer moving.

Geoflove has suggested you check the zero switch on the #4 score reel. You will need to slide the score reel itself out from its position (Unclip). You will see a set of switches (0-9 switches) which open & close as the score reel operates. These switches need to be clean and aligned properly.

You will find more information here > http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index2.htm#reels

Also, it's a good idea to tighten down the screws of any switch stack before you clean and adjust the switches.

So it probably has nothing to do with any of the relays under the playfield in the bottom of the cabinet?

Ok checked that and adjusted it. Now the score motor continues to turn and the 2 nd relay from the top continues to clock. It will not allow another ball to be played. If you remove the ball it will stop. Also you cannot play more than one player. Unfortunately it does not get a lot of play time so it seems every time I want to play, something else is wrong. I have also included pics of the score reels and the switch positions if you can make them out.

I think I might have found part of the problem number four score reel. I removed it and this is what I found. Part of the mechanism is missing. Could the last owner have rigged this to get it to work?

Sometimes the drive pawl breaks off from the coil plunger, it looks like that may be what has happened here. This will definitely cause the game to get stuck in reset.

As a temporary work-around, you can set all three switches on the switch stack of this busted score unit to be open all the time. Once you do this, the game should fully reset and go to player 1, ball 1 so you can play the game while you obtain a replacement part for your score unit. Since the busted score unit is on player four, you should still be able to play up to three players.

If you do the above work-around and the game still doesn't start and play as normal, then your game has other issues that will need to be fixed.

Update. Replaced coil on score reel number 4. Reels reset and ball charges. Once the ball drains, the score motor continues to turn and the bonus relay clicks. Checked and cleaned bonus unit contacts. Advice from another person. Still no luck. What should I check next. Also will not go to next player if multiple players are selected

I suspect the zero position switch on the Bonus stepper. like it's counting down bonus and never reaching zero.

Take a look through the manual. it will give you the sequence of operations after the first ball is played.
