Are the DMDs on Capcom games unique to Capcom games or can you use other standard DMDs on them.

I recently picked up a Capcom Airborn where the DMD is a bit gassed or burnt.
This is my first Capcom game, so I'm not really familiar with them at all.
Before I delve too far into a suitable replacement, are these unique to Capcom games?

I have a few Bally Williams and SEGA DMDs sitting around from games I converted to Color DMDs.
Was wondering if any of those would work.
Thanks in advance.

Great, thanks.

They aren’t -exactly- the same. The voltages are slightly different, although most DMDs can tolerate the difference. Capcom DMDs require a higher voltage, so putting a Williams DMD in a Capcom game will wear it out sooner. But what you’re doing it should be ok.

Capcom, not Capcon.

Any of those DMDs will work in Airborne. More of an issue I see is some of the smaller electrolytic capacitors leak and damage the small 4"x4" DMD power board, including a potential hole burning through the board, as 3 boards I had repaired.

Testing the DMD into Fish Tales is a good step. I do recommend replacing the caps on the DMD power board.

You can now install a Sigma ColorDMD in Airborne, even though it is not yet colorized, but you can enjoy what ever single color you want the display to be. Using a ColorDMD, you can then remove the small DMD power board since it will no longer be needed for the high voltages the regular DMD needs.

Thanks, got the spelling corrected.
Is there plans to colorize this?
If so, I would just buy a color DMD for it if its in the works.

Every DMD game is planned to be colorized. So far for Capcom, Pinball Magic, Big Bang Bar and Breakshot have been done and they look great.

So buy the LED ColorDMD for any of those three games and it will work in Airborne.

I just swapped it out with a DMD that came out of Jurassic Park Lost World which was replaced with a color DMD.

I’ll get a color DMD for it when they colorize it and the firmware is available.

Here’s a before and after where you can see the burn on the old one.
It’s basically burn in from the attract mode character.
