I know this is a stupid question but I need to replace a capacitor 100uf 35v and I have a capacitor with this spec although it is slightly smaller. Is there something else from a specification I should be looking at or are these both the same.

The first photo is the part that needs to be replaced and the second photo is the replacement part I have.

If it’s the same values it’s fine.
Modern caps a quite often smaller.

I didn’t think it was a stoopid question. The only dumb question is the one you never ask when you don’t know the answer lol.

Funny i was just replacing some disc caps on some playfield switches in my seawitch tonight. Check this out for scale - these are both the same value:

These kinds of comparisons always trip me out. I also collect black and white arcade games. Sometimes when your working on an old black and white monitor it’s crazy how small the replacement caps are in size to the original. It’s soo drastically different you almost feel like you’re doing something wrong, but that’s how those things have evolved.

Just a quick comment since I deal with this daily in my designs: They might have a different voltage rating, or the dielectric (the 'stuff' between the plates) has different properties. Could be ceramic, porcelain, X7R, Y5V, etc. Usually you trade one property off for another (i.e for size vs. performance, etc.).

Here's a link for some quick info: https://www.electronics-notes.com/articles/electronic_components/capacitors/ceramic-dielectric-types-c0g-x7r-z5u-y5v.php

Don't mean to sound like a 'know it all', just more of a FYI.

Thanks everyone. Thought that would be the case. Finished the job and everything went as it should.

On electrolytic capacitors like the ones in question here normally the smaller the capacitor is for the same UF, and voltage rating the better the quality. This seems backwards, but I've seen those "cap kits" come with some utter garbage in huge size capacitors and the stuff they sold at Radio Shack were big and horrible. Put a cheap Chinese capacitor next to a quality Japanese the Chinese will always be larger size.

That’s interesting, still learning stuff everyday!

The ones i used are rated at 100V as well. Not sure about the construction of them though. I like to shop at GPE since Ed will often list what the part is used for in a pinball machine. Or if not i can email him and he will set me straight. These were listed as common switch matrix caps so i felt confident in buyin em

Ed at GPE always gives good advice!
