Has anyone had any luck replacing a broken capacitor on a dmd? I am working on a rescue 911 and have a replacement used dmd but one of the legs on a capacitor is broken off so I will need to repair but the solder joint is under the dmd. I'm not sure the best method would be or if it's possible to separate the 2 without damaging the dmd. Looking for advice.

    Thanks!

Without seeing the part to be replaced, can you cut the legs of the old capacitor, leaving enough leg to solder the new capacitor to? Old electronics technique.

No it is broken at the solder point it. I thought the same thing just connect to what was exposed.

If you have the space on the PCB, you could solder the cap leaving enough of the leads out so you have room to solder, then just bend it over and secure it to the PCB with some double sided foam tape.

I guess the real question is, is there a good way to separate the glass dmd from the PCB?

Not really, no. It's not a very serviceable device, unfortunately.

I'm thinking heat and a plastic spackle knife to separate the double side foam tape.

You also have to desolder every single leg of the glass from the PCB without breaking any of them. Not worth the time/effort/risk.

I had a rectifier fry on a MSF large Dmd, clipped it off, soldered a few extension wires to new one and mounted it....Been working great for years now..

Unless the glass is the very first generation glass with physical pins, and you are up to desoldering every pin, and then trying to get them back into the holes, then no. It's not possible.

New DMD glass connections are "taped" to the PCB. You'll never get them off and then on again.
