Played JP recently, and ended up with a high score! However, I wasn't able to move the letters to type my initials in which means I was stuck with AAA. Yeah, not fun.

Is this something to do with the boards in the backbox or something else?

left/right flipper switches (detection) not working - switch test and confirm. then check out the flipper board for issues. usual "help" files have debunking steps.

There have been 3 threads about this (or something close to this) in the past 2 days.

I will pass along my past experience. I had a Last Action Hero where the flippers worked fine, but inputting initials or a custom message in the setting was a jerky mess (sometime a flipper button wouldn't change the letter...other times it would jump 2 or 3 letters). It was an issue with the flipper board. I don't know what....but it wasn't as easy as a fuse. It needed board work done to correct the issue. The flipper board is in the lower cabinet, almost halfway back on the left.

its a isolator circuit that went bad in your case. typically a single chip or a resistor that melted out or cold solder due to dissipation of heat issues.

Hahaha Good one!!!!

Should've mentioned that the flipper buttons when pressed don't move the letters around.

Today, I noticed that a black wire was pulled near the flipper wires on my JP. I think this is the problem I have.

I hope that fixes you up. I figured this problem was long resolved.

Yeah, but I'm wondering how much this would cost me and even worse, I had a tech over on Friday.

Yeah, don't call that guy again...

Post a pic of the black wire insitu.
Then we can figure out where it might go.
As noted, the SSFB is also on the switch matrix. When a flipper cabinet switch is grounded, the SSFB indicates the switch closure to the MPU.

There are two TO-92 case transistors in this circuit, but connectors are always the first suspicion.
