I've changed a few ics and other parts headers and sockets to repair this mpu from corrosion. Lotta little hitches here and there but I finally got it booting up with 7 flashes. But since removing the battery it went to defaults, sounds etc.
Now, I can't get past option 5 to set anything. This was an existing problem before the rework, by the way) i've found snippets that seem to be similar here and there but no luck for me.
I may be making some false assumptions as how to test this too, I've heard hold the button, tap the button and i found even another button hiding on the right underside of the playfield. Also do i need to reconnect a battery to even get the other options?
The Dip switches may well have been accidentelly changed if that makes a difference... I don't have a good pre-picture.
I can follow a schematic if someone can give me ideas.. Thanks

So you are cycling the audits and it hangs every time when you advance past audit #5? Try zeroing the audit 5 (use the button on the top middle of the MPU to zero an audit, sometimes a coin switch works) before stepping forward. Try a new 5101 RAM.

No luck there... just starts over after the fifth push. I've tried 2 -5101s cause i thought i bought one to fast -1. The last i ordered a 5101l-3 and got a 5101l-C(from pbr), hope thats equivalent. Anyways pushed the red switch on the board at different times and no luck. I've tried grounding all the pins, i've replaced U8 socket

i would scope / probe the pins of the 5101 like OE, CE1, RW pins of the 5101 to see if they are all pulsing. CE2 should be high (reset).

swapping out new u7 and u9 is pretty painless if you have other known goods.

Well a little progress... didn't change anything yet but with hard pushing and timing the button. Actually got to option #18 and changed it to 3 with the replay button. After turning off and on nothing changed, but I didn't have a battery in it. I haven't been able to repeat getting through the options again so I'll try to change out that button and put in a battery next.

Although it seems to hang at diff times most often it hangs after it blinks the lights then checks all the solenoids before the actual audit. If i press the board button it'll lock till restart. Replacing the battery didn't change thing either. Tried a different 5101 with worse luck. Don't have a probe either.... Haven't been able to get back to #18 again. Sometimes ill see the audit #s start to go by, but it'll lock or just start over. I cleaned but still haven't replaced the button...

probably not the button.

someone just had a post where a R/W input to the 5101 on williams game caused similar sounding issues.

I've tried 3 different 5101lc chips and still can't change settings. I've replaced both PIAs , U8 & U14 & 555 timer and assorted components during board rebuild, but remember this was a prior problem. I've checked many traces around the areas with no luck. is there any other chip I should replace?

No, it wasn't the button.
couldn't find the post you described.

I've got the 6800 & 6810 ordered... hopefully its one of those. Pretty much only the roms left that.

Stupid question, but are you pushing switch S33 (top right corner of the MPU) during test mode (i.e. during lamp/display/solenoid/sound/switch test mode)? It's not shorted by any chance?
If you do, the game will go into lala land and hang during test mode unless you've got an AID module connected.
S33 should only be pressed once you get to the audits.

S33 is ok. I've also replaced all of the socketed chips with no luck.

To make things clearer... check this out...
As soon as I get to #5 it doesn't actually hang, but it reboots itself everytime.

Another discovery... TP2 is 14.7v instead of 11.9v could this be important?

It does partly supply voltage to the 5101 when powered.
1. What voltage are you measuring on pin 22 of the 5101?

It almost sounds like you've got bit rot in the ROM at U6, but in that case it should fail the ROM test on power-up.
2. If you manually reset the CPU while the game is on (quickly short pin 39 and pin 40 on the CPU), does it always successfully pass the 7 LED flashes?

3. When you did manage to get through the 5th press of the self test button, did it report any stuck switches?
4. Disregarding the service mode issues, is the game actually playable?

You could see if you can get farther by disconnecting MPU J2 and J3 (the pf and cabinet switches). You'll have to simulate the self test button press by carefully shorting J3 pin 1 to ground. The self test button input does not need a diode.

1) 5.2v 2) Yes 3) That time I pressed the buttons I went right past 5 and didn't stop till i got to 18. 4) Yes its playable, but in default mode, beeps and buzzes instead of sound effects...

Unfortunately no change. Still reboots at step 5.
