You specifically said background volume.... So you are not talking about the main volume that is adjusted when the machine is in attract or play mode, but the deep down setting in portals that is background volume level 1 to 15....

If that is the case, it doesn't really do anything. If you are wanting to adjust volume, do it without entering portals, using the middle two buttons...
