I made a little experiment with a few people and we tried to buy a shitload of items in bulk and have them shipped to the border. If I would have shipped the items cross border it would have cost more than $400 in shipping and duties for my parts alone. Given the amount ordered (close to 450 pieces and 1000 LED bulbs). The total could had easily been $600 in duties and shipping)

Now it cost 4 people, $43 to ship to a warehouse, $20 for storage, $6 bucks to cross the bridge (back and forth), $130 in taxes, $20 in gas for about $219 in fees.

Going to be doing another run in late spring and hopefully get more people involved and really stick it to the man.

Most places like Pinball Life, Marco Specialisties ship via UPS or Fedex..in that case you are completely screwed

As soon as you do international checkout, shipping goes up 400%.

See what we ended up doing is buying from Marco Specialities, Bay Amusements, Pinball Life and Comet Pinball. Some parts where available from one supplier but not the other and some parts where cheaper from one but not the other. If we would have ordered from all four and shipped to Canada it would have costed a small fortune instead of putting the money towards parts. But if you ship within the states Comet was free shipping (bougth about 850 bulbs), Bay was $6.40, Pinball life was $26 (lots of heavy and big parts) and Marco was $10. Could have never gotten that kind of price to ship to Canada. Plus I did a Habour Freight purchase....Some items in there were 70% off compared to canada, I must have bought 100lbs of stuff and shipping to the border was only $6.99.

I get the point, if you are buying only from one place then, you might chance it, but all in all i think it is worth the 1.5 hour drive I have to make. $100 bucks in my pockets can pay for alot of things....

I live in Ottawa and will be making another round of big purchases when the Fish Tales CPR playfield comes out in 2014. I'll post a thread about it a month in advance.

Example of what I was talking about Side rails with Marco are $59.00 but with Pinball Life they are $42.00. That's a $17 dollar difference. So by shopping at different locations you save even more. People in the states have that luxury of paying for cheap shipping and no customs/duties/taxes. We, on the other hand have to be a bit more creative.

I can't wait to see the guys face at the border when I tell him I have 1K in pinball parts. I just hope they don't take the lube out!

    Quoted from Hobbypinball:

Brokerage is killer I bought a personalized iphone Case for 25$. Ended up as 70 $ at the door. CRAZY!

You avoid all the brokerage fees when you go by yourself. +1 DIY I bought a longboard for my godson. Here in Canada board was $270 + taxes. In California, $159 + free shipping for the same exact board. And the funniest thing is that the board is made of Canadian Maple. Maybe I should argue that this is a re-import LOL.

And don't forget to strap a bottle of purell around your neck and wipe the buttons down before you touch the machines... Yeah I tought about going to a show for a few days so it's all duty free when you come back up.. perhaps it will be done for the spring or summer run
