Purchased 2 ems. Jack in the box and jungle. They were outside for a while, under plastic. Heavy mouse urine, housing, poop. I can do minor cleaning, take everything off playfield, wax, replace rubbers, etc. I have never restored a whole playfield. Looks like everythings there. Hate to take apart for parts. Opinions. Not looking to get rich, would rather restore and see them working again. Paid $200 each. probably overpaid, but liked the challenge.

I never restored a game either but I have refurbished several EM's in that condition. It can be done!
I did all my EM's the same way. I tore everything off and or apart and cleaned it. Once everything was cleaned and put back together then I would troubleshoot.

The nice thing about EMs is that you can get them running even if the apocalypse strikes. You just need some flexstone, a soldering iron, a screw driver and maybe a pair of pliers.

I think they're salvageable. If Cuba can keep their cars running, you can get these games back into shape.

Its the backglasses that are the bummer.

#15 8 years ago

will urine stains ruin cabinet? I feel like taking a hose and rubbing alcohol to the whole thing. I haven't even lifted up playfield. just saw tons of mouse bedding down backbox hole.I guess gloves, mask, and shopvac are the first steps. Should I go right with novus 2 on playfield? or disinfect with lysol first. Maybe take top layer of grime off

#16 8 years ago

plastics, rollovers, targets look ok. For their age, I didn't think backglasses were horrible.I need to get them out and cleaned first.

AM I missing something? Both of his backglasses look to be pretty good for a EM. Nothing a little Tripple thick cant help.

After cleaning cabinet scrub it with carpet cleaner clean playfield with 50 /50 purple power or simple green

#19 8 years ago

Well, worst case scenario. You got $3!!

it will go towards my bubonic plague medical bill

#21 8 years ago

I will post better pictures tomorrow. Going to spend a few hrs looking it over.

#22 8 years ago

I think getting the urine stink out of the cabinet may be next to impossible.

As for the playfield, I would be worried about the paint starting to lift. So I would start with some very gentle cleaning techniques until you can establish if the paint is going to lift.

#23 8 years ago

Sop vac and let them air out. If you use Lysol, purple power or simple green it will make the wood swell. But heck I have done it before. Most will recommend Naphtha. See vids guide to playfield restoration.

#24 8 years ago

Life's short. Instead, just go to the gym and then drink scotch and eat ribs

#25 8 years ago

Yes whatever cleaner you use on cabinet and playfield you want the exposure time as short as short as possible to avoid Swelling of the wood

#26 8 years ago

Looks like too much work for the possible reward - just me thinking out loud.... Mice eat insulation off wires & the stink is about impossible to get rid of.....

#27 8 years ago

I would imagine almost any em could be saved with enough time and money.

But Jack in the box is a really fun game, I used to own one, mine was not infested with mice but pretty nasty when I got it.

#28 8 years ago

I redid one that bad before. You are going to laugh but to get the smell out of the cabinet, I used a wire brush And brushed out the entire inside of the cabinet. I was basically taking a layer of wood off of it. You then take a shopvac and vac it out and then let it set in the garage for a couple of weeks. The inside of the cabinet will then look really good. That's how I did it. Ed

#29 8 years ago

If vacuuming, do it outside for safety's sake. Once the cabinet has been vacuumed out, then you can inspect the wiring to see if the mice have chewed the insulation off of any wires.

Both games look like they could use a paint job. Sanding and repainting will get rid of most of the smell.

Oh that one game looks like you might need to cut out and install a new cabinet bottom panel.

That coin door and coin entrance housing that are rusted should get put in Evapo-Rust for a week. They should come out looking decent.

In my experiences over the years, I've seen a lot worse condition machines than the ones you've got. Yours look like they can be restored.

#30 8 years ago

Definitely do not vacuum old dry mouse droppings. At the least do the vacuuming outside. Use Nitrile gloves. A particle mask would also be advised. Some people will mist the dropping with glass cleaner then vacuum them. Carefully remove the dust from the vacuum and wash it out including the wet filter.

#31 8 years ago

ozone machine will take out any smell.

can they be saved. probably. is it going to be worth it for these titles? probably not.

Backglasses look pretty good tho.

#32 8 years ago

After a cleaning, I put a couple of drops of this on a cotton ball on a glass dish... put the dish in the cabinet... and cover the cabinet with a tarp... and let sit for a few days. Repeat the process again every few days until the smell is gone:

http://www.amazon.com/Wrap--Company-5Oz-Freshener-Oa-12/dp/B0017GTPTS/ref=sr_1_8

This has worked for me removing smoke smell, musty old wood smell, urine smell, etc. It doesn't add new smell... it doesn't mask it with another smell... it literally absorbs it and makes it go away. Can't recommend this enough.

#33 8 years ago

The biggest issue will be paint lifting on the playfield if mice peed on it. There is something in mouse pee that eats at the finish on the playfield and when you try to clean it up paint will just fall off. Before you waste too much time on everything else I would see if stains will clean off the playfields.

Sadly I learned about this the hard way when I greatly overpaid for a machine with a little staining on the playfield from mice. NEVER AGAIN!

As far as vacuum and cabinets. Take them to the quarter car wash to vacuum them out. Well worth putting $3 or $4 into their vacuum instead of infecting your shop vac. I use my shop vac for a little of everything but I NEVER use it to sweep mouse droppings out of cabinets. Quarter car wash is the way to go for that!

All the car washes in my locality were forced to close due to new state regulations over a year ago. They wanted the car washes to install $200,000 "soap recovery systems" so the owners simply closed up.

The OP is in New Jersey- how is that relevant?

It's probably not, but it might apply to others. I found the comment interesting. Hope that doesn't happen around here. I like car washes.

i know that's the first place I took a cocktail vid I picked up that was full of rodent "evidence". best quarters I spent.

The Jungle looks pretty good from the pic, but the second to last pic showing a close up of Jack in the Box looks pretty bad. The red in the face is gone, pin holes in the hat, chunks missing in the blue and next to player 2 score, most of the red in the word Jack is gone . . . I think that will look pretty bad when lit up. And touch ups on something like that never come out good. Just my opinion.

All depends on if it's going to be a full blown restoration or just getting the games back to working/playing condition. Some of my backglasses on my games are worse but I can live with them. But then again I consider myself a low end collector.

Edit: Just looking at your collection, Man with your DMD's and my Classic SS games we could go together and open one hell of an pincade!

Too many bare bulbs showing makes me nuts. But the room lighting in my game room is dim. My collection conditions range just like the collection itself. You have a heck of a collection with only a couple I don't remember playing.

I see you have a Fireball Classic on your wish-list. I loaned mine to The Sanctum in Meriden CT recently and boy to they love that game. It is great to see with a selection from Bazaar to Full Throttle how many people enjoy that game.
