This grunge seems to be deep in small grooves which look suspiciously like wood grain. Alcohol cleaned up some of it but magic pads are a no go due to age and quality of the finish. I tried a small spot and results are bad. I'm afraid to use anything abrasive....
Any suggestions?

You guys are probably right.
Gotta give my head a shake sometimes and realize is 50 years old with about 80000 plays on the clock.

Quoted from TheLaw:

Nothin' wrong with a classic machine looking like a classic!

Quoted from Otaku:

And if that coat of paint is that thin to begin with you're asking for trouble by using ME & alcohol on it.
A playfield that's a little dirty is sure a lot better than a playfield that you took the paint off of with ME & alcohol. Rules to live by.

That my friend is the best advice I've gotten in a long time.
Cheers and Merry Christmas.

Now.... I wonder if we have any "ice spheres" laying about....
