I rarely see a receiver opto fail in any game. The transmitters are basically IR LEDs that do burn out over time.

Can you describe the behavior a bit more? Or add a video?
Generally, the magnet should have no problem pulling a ball that is an inch from the center of the magnet, but beyond that, it may not especially if the ball if traveling fast.
