Can a 1N4004 diode go intermittently bad?

    Yeah...you're talking about 7-9 cents here. Even if you suspected it, you might as well just plug the soldering iron in and replace it. Then you'll know for sure.

    Yup.
    That's the part I replace most frequently. Have a shaker motor in my girlfriends JP, which I had to dissable, because it was causing too many diodes to fail. Sometimes, right out of the package, they are no good. I test every one before I install them with a DMM.

    No - they will either work or do not. That being said it can have a bad solder connection if it sometimes works or doesn't.

    Yes, I've replaced flaky diodes that act up when they warm up.

    Sometimes you can tug on completely good looking, good testing ones, and they just crumble in your grip.
