The news is saying that a tree branch went across the power lines that caused a fire. Seems like an act of nature to me and should be supported by FEMA, but again they don’t look at wildfires that way. Strong winds and snow damage utility lines. I looked at a job where last years snow knocked down several fiberglass power poles that feed major communications towers. Environmental will not let the work happen and it costs some big money to keep their generators going. In the end it really is safer to cut power and patrol those lines before allowing electricity to flow again. Major inconvenience? Most definitely I personally hate when my power goes out just like everyone else. Again we should look at better legislation possibly. Or possibly with my one job someone should go shoot or encourage that woodpecker to leave. Animals and trees sometimes have more rights than a community when your a company. We usually have had a bad time with arsonist and maybe still do and it’s easier to go after companies with money. Which then starts the whole whoever the last company to touch that pole gets the bill game.

I remember last years Paradise fires had some YouTube videos suggesting laser beams from space...then some dude who fled paradise came to my house afterwards for something I was selling on CL and he started going on about laser beams...and I was just like what heck man, is this another controlled demolition?

Lots of evidence out there in the recent past of it that's for sure. Burst into flame wooden post guard rails furiously blazing away when the dry trees close by have no damage. Also cars that are burned with unusally hot fire and houses too when the houses are cars next door are fine.

It just doesn't add up to what you'd expect out of a wild fire.

That will change. Its inevitable that when people are leaving, so will work. I know many people who have closed up shop in Cali, along with there small business, and moved to AZ. If that is happening daily/weekly, Cali will begin to see the affects, if they arent already. I do hope they stay a sanctuary state though!!!

Lots of that going on everywhere. Those who don't study the past are doomed to repeat it. I visited family recently where I grew up and saw all kinds of new homes along the Chattahoochee River, which I've seen flood massively twice in my life. Same with development along the beaches in Panama City and other places, which get hit periodically by powerful Hurricanes.

They are getting closer. Just a few miles from where I am sitting. Sirens roaring and fire trucks screaming by.

All I heard most of my life is about the "big one" hitting us. And then you learn that the San Andreas fault is just a little cousin of the Cascadia fault from Washington. 30 times more powerful with a tsunami coming after. FEMA director was quoted as saying west of 5 near Seattle will be, "toast" from just the quake. Scientists figure San Andreas capable of 8.2. Cascadia capable of 9.2. Won't be the damage down here in San Clemente as other places from San Andreas. And most of my life I thought that avocados were either Hass or Fuerte till I met you. I've got plenty of water and my avocado trees to get me by till I get the f out here if it hits when I'm here. Getting ready next month for my first batch of Sir Prize avocados. Supposed to last in the fridge like the Reeds you gave me.

Lot of fires starting up with all this wind. Leaves are all over my property. Driving to work and this just started up.

Thank you for your concern. It is a little scary seeing and hearing about all these fires. What I don’t understand is all these pinsiders hating on us and our state for these natural disasters. I don’t think any of us Californians have hated on other pinsiders for their natural disasters. I assure you, that I didn’t hate on or bash Louisiana people because you didn’t stop or prepare for hurricane Katrina and the damage it did. I didn’t bash on Texas for hurricane Harvey, nor New Jersey for Sandy. But somehow it’s ok for everyone to blame our natural disasters on the “Libtards” that run the state. And some guy from Reno of all places trashes us and when I jokingly defend Ca I’m the bad guy.

Yeah, politics is bad enough anytime, but times of tragedy people especially need to pull together and help each other. Well I know insurance companies have denied coverage to people living near the ocean in areas known to get hit hard regularly so I would say yes to your question. Hopefully not though.

We have always had bad fire seasons. I don’t know why this year is any different. Except for the fact that now people are suing power companies and they are turning off power to defend against it.

But the oldest waitress I’ve seen was in Vegas. She was running the comped well drinks to the slots at the Westgate when we stayed there last Xmas.

Re the fires - an NZ ambassador lives off Sunset in Hollywood, he was on our NZ radio a few days ago saying that he had to be evacuated for his house. Pretty crazy.

These eucalyptus trees were not supposed to be in California to begin with. They are fragile and can start a fire instantly. I have so many of them around my property and they are huge. I dont even know where to start to get rid of them.

Side note, I just got home after a week without electricity, I have 30 pounds of meat and 20 of fish that can go straight to garbage. No more food hoarding in Norcal I guess.

My whole neighborhood is littered with these trees and I have the biggest one on my block. The branches are so brittle with no flexibility. Every time we get a strong wind or heavy rain, small branches (4-10 feet) from the thing break off and fall on my front lawn or roof and every fall the leaves litter the neighborhood. Hopefully the really big branches don’t break off.

People move out of this area when someone offers them crazy money for their house so they can move into this area.

Yep, when you sell at top dollar you frequently have to buy at top dollar. You get priced out of the market. So it makes sense to sell the home and move to a more affordable area. Just sucks when you have to leave working kids/grandkids in the area.

Check out the flow mapper I posted above and you can see where people are moving to from Orange County and San Deigo and who is replacing them.

Perhaps when you sorta take notice of a lessor, beat up house in the neighborhood selling for top dollar.

Regarding your insurance questions, the answer is yes, that point is here now. I know some people from the burn areas who have that exact problem. They can’t get insurance, or it simply costs a fortune.

However, the fires are Not increasing recently, no way. There have always been fires in CA, going way back before recent times when we decided to fill it up with people. Most of CA is a dry desert and has been for a long time. There have been many huge fires in the dry forests for many years, mostly caused by lightning strikes. Big fires that encroach into housing areas are nothing new, I have seen them happen in person going back to the 70s. You just hear more about them now because of the internet and increased communication. And yes, there continues to be more and more building out into dry, crackly areas with lots of fuel to go up in flames. The Santa Ana winds have always been here and they drive the humidity down to near zero and fan the flames. Mostly unspoken in the popular news is that a good portion of the fires are caused by ahole fire bug arsonists. They live for the days when the Santa Ana wins come and go out to set fires. Several have been caught red handed during this recent group of fires. Did you read about it? And in more recent times we have lots of vagrants living out and about in dry outskirts. Either through carelessness or intentionally that have set many of these recent fires. It’s not politically correct to name them as the cause so you generally won’t hear about it.

Places like Paradise where the big Camp fire was continue to be built up because lots of people want to live in the beautiful woods. That placed burned up in 2008 also. They rebuilt and expanded after that. It probably will burn up again. But they will rebuild there in the meantime.

The whole thing seems similar to me as areas in the Midwest in the flood plains of the big rivers. Lots of people live there, expanding and happy until a major flood rolls around and wipes them out, then they rebuild. And after a while another flood comes and wipes them out again. Then they rebuild. On it goes.

That Mother Nature can really be a bitch sometimes, that’s what it comes down to.
