Why not move? One can sell their home in Cali for say $800K and get the same size unit here for less than $200K. Further most companies I have worked for also keep the same pay rate (maybe a small increase) when moving so it is a no brainer.
In contrast if I tried to move to California, I would keep the same pay and have to try to afford an $800K domicile. I tried it right out of college as I was offered a job in Seattle, I lasted one year and had to return to TX.

I agree we get taxed to death, but your missing the point. My point was they are leaving because most who have lived in California for 30+ years can sell their house for 10X more than what they paid for it. They can then turn around and buy a house twice as big for a 1/4 of the cost, and keep the balance to live out their remaining years....thats why their leaving....

I thought when i moved to OR, my water bill would go down,

Was I surprized when i got my first water bill.
During the winter it averages about $80 a month
and during the summer when I actually water my lawn, its about $180/mo.
When I lived in Bakersfield CA ( where average rainfall is about 6in /yr)
my water bill in winter was about $30/mo and during the summer when i had to water everyday
otherwize my lawn would burn up due to 90-100'F weather for 6 months
my water bill might top out at $80/mo.
Turns out in Oregon water is controlled by the cities
and its their indirect way of taxing its citizens,
thats another reason why so many lawns are brown.

Interesting, I just had a meetup with a bunch of people from Austin, who were saying how their neighbors were moving out because of a hike in property tax and selling to fresh movers from California !
People in the northeast lose power once a year or more, especially in winter. My longest was a week, but I’ve known people that had it worse. This is a weather generated power outage - hurricane, Nor’easter/blizzard, that kind of thing.
The fact that California is having a weather related power outage doesn’t seem strange or objectionable to me at all. So what if it’s preventive? It’s better than losing your house or your life.
Suck it up and buy a generator.

Actually no. It doesn't. Born and raised in Cali. Living elsewhere now but can tell you for sure that California has a very specific set of issues.
Part of the problems is that your fellow Californians are tolerant of homelessness and many communities are tolerant to open drug use. The other issue is you have a climate that is conducive to living on the streets.
Not disrespecting California by any means. Just pointing out that if you think every city has people camped out on the interstate in tents like on the 5 then you should travel more.
BTW, a large corporate conference was just cancelled in San Fran. because of the issues going on there. Until the city is cleaned up there is no way I will visit again.

It’s a real mess here.
Even in the small communities like where I grew up.
It really is heartbreaking.
It's really strange how different parts of the USA have a different perspective. I have lots of huge pine trees in my yard that dump pine straw and cones all over my yard, almost all the time. So, I am constantly cleaning up pine straw and cones so my grass will grow and my yard will look presentable, like my neighbors. The trees also drop all kinds of debris on my vehicles, which I also have to constantly clean off. Twice in the past 10 years or so, I have had tree limbs or entire trees fall on my roof and cause damage. They are a major pain and I just wish I could remove them all and plant nice small trees that look presentable, probably slow growing oak trees. However, the homeowner's association in my neighborhood will not allow any large trees to be removed without permission in writing (and I have asked). So, I am stuck with all these huge trees that I hate. The pine trees in my yard are the tallest in the general area, so they are also like a target for lightning. They are gigantic and several have been struck in recent years. I do have a riding lawnmower with a bagging attachment that makes cleaning up the pine straw a little easier, but it is a constant struggle. Having said all that, there is no way that I would want to live in a forest. My yard would never be clean, assuming I had a yard.
We lost power for a few days this spring. Luckily the weather was nice so we didn't need heat to keep the pipes thawed. No AC when it is less than 90 degrees is no big deal. Hotter, it gets uncomfortable. All we did was:
1. Did not open fridge or freezers.
2. Put out candles at night.
3. Read books at night.
4. Went to bed early.
Guess what happended. Power came back on, the food was ok, and we were able to catch up on our shows. It was actually quite pleasant.
I have lost power in winter and that sucks because you have to worry about frozen pipes bursting. That's about the worst I can imagine. Now that I have a CPAP I would still be okay because I have a battery back up for it and solar charging for when we camp.
PSA-
If you frequently lose power or know you are going to lose power then put a cup of water in the freezer. Once frozen stick a quarter on top of the ice. Leave it in the freezer.
If you ever lose power and the quarter is at the bottom of the cup don't eat the food. It's evidence that the freezer temp dropped.
If I lose electric service for more than an hour, I am going to move my manual transfer switch to the "generator" position and crank that baby up with the electric start. The refrigerator will be the 1st thing checked to make sure it still works and all my stuff in there is ok.

And Im not saying its a bad thing, smart infact. The problem is, its the voters who elect the idiots who enact the laws that drive prices up. Then the voters cash out, leave the high prices behind and move somewhere. Unfortunately, the voters dont leave their stupidity behind and start voting for the same stupid policies that drove them out in the first place.
