Any idea what time you might start the stream?

Not yet, hopefully not too late. Still not fully setup and they kicked us out last night, plus with 10 player long queues I need to play a bit first. Only got two games in yesterday while trying to setup.

Yow!

Well, no pressure. It's all a plus for those of us not in attendance.

A few useful links for us viewers:

In other news, I see that Bowen has 957K on FP. I hope that the spinner is dialed, because otherwise there's no way that game didn't take 25 minutes.

Is admission cash only? I want to say it was in the past... anyone know?

yeah it lasted a while, not as much as his MET but more than his WCS...

I'm excited to announce that the P3 is coming to CAX! If history is any indication, the P3 is a machine that needs to be experienced in person; so please take this opportunity to come by our booth, play the P3, and chat about the exciting future of pinball.

The P3 boiz are probably already getting sick of me hanging around, but he's right, the game must be played to be believed. I am hooked. I love the overhead flipper mechs, the aluminum flippers, the little smoke trails the ball makes across the pf, the "beer" mode where you shoot for the mugs and fill them and then shoot them again to chug the beer. I absolutely love the multiball mode with no flipper hold. You're shooting on the run baby. The opportunities for reworking code and everything else about the game are nigh unto limitless. The game rules!

This place is a zoo this year! They're not kidding when they say pinball popularity has taken off. Lines are long but not to bad of a wait. pinballbulbs.com corner is spectacular! 10+ games fill there corner all LED with their bulbs. What looked like an original MM was in restored condition along with WW and MB.

Here some pics... And also pinballbulbs.com has a 15% discount for online orders. Promotion code CAXPINBALL15. FYI, I don't know them or work for them.

Headed back in...

CAX is PACKED! These photos were taken circa 12pm Saturday. Some pretty rare stuff ( BBB and Kingpin ) that I would never be able to play. Great people, but need a deodorant dispensing station for select attendees.

No kidding! It was nuts, the whole place is off the hook with sights and sounds. It was far more crowded this year than last year from what I could see. The Yahoo company picnic at the stadium brought over more people as well.

#221 4 years ago

anyone played hobbit yet? how is it?

#222 4 years ago

Too crowded. Spoiled by TPF. Left after just s couple hours (if that) of nudging and tilting people to get around, less so for gaming. Was pretty cool to see some vintage video games up and running.

#223 4 years ago

PinballBulbs: was nice to see some machines on display with your kits. Helps give a good comparison of photo vs reality. Too purple for my collection but nicely done overall. Your lighting would look pretty sweet in something like a cherry BBB Thanks for making it out.

#224 4 years ago

No Hobbit. There was an informative panel with Peel and Thiel. Sounds impressive, but no release date. The panel stated the game is in " final electrical testing and you know what that means... Final production is right after that ". Have no clue the accuracy of that statement, but Thiel did mention he was recording a new narrator next weekend. Sounds like JJP is tying up loose ends as they near production.

#225 4 years ago

I was talking with Joey Springer tonight (Sat) and he told me hasn't played in a year (he had a kid last year). And he finished third in qual! Super nice guy. Hope he does well in the finals tomorrow (er... today I mean).

#226 4 years ago

If any of you are still reading this thread... I'll be doing another fun casual tournament tomorrow. Probably a 1-handed. I'm going to see if Marco will let me use their Kiss, otherwise I'll find a good EM.

I have one more KISS translite to give away, as well as a limited edition (30/100) Alice in Wonderland print from ZombieYeti, and 2 passes to the Cal Academy of Sciences "Evening" events (read: booze). And maybe I can finagle some other goodies.

I'll post the time on the big events board in the registration area, and on the machine itself once I know I'm not conflicting with other events, as well as announce it over the loudspeaker an hour in advance. Shooting for some time like 3, 4, or 5 PM.

party on

#227 4 years ago

Oh, and a small brag: I got 200k on Spy Hunter on my second game, just 50k short of high score. Not bad since I haven't played more than probably five games of it since 1985 (they became very rare, and often broken when you can find them). It was also a little weird playing in sit-down cab.

I had a little crowd gathered around, and maxed out extra lives without losing any. Started choking it up around 150k and I don't remember the weapons patterns past the fourth or 5th transition which is pretty key. Pretty cool that the very first video game I fell in love with which got me into arcade gaming in general was a George Gomez creation!

Gonna take another crack at the 250k high score tomorrow.

I was having an awesome game on Star Trek (stern) 170 million+ when all of a sudden the LEDs on the floods above the slings drop onto the playfield. One wedges in front of the slingshot arm. The other goes down into the trough, blocking the optos enough that the game goes into endless ball search. Hate when that stuff happens.
Apart from that it is wonderful to see and play all my favourite vector games - Quantum, Tempest, etc.

#230 4 years ago

Walkthrough video of the show. Was still pretty busy around midnight when I shot this.

QUANTUM is there?? Ohhhhhh snap I LOVE that game, never seen it in the wild, only played it on MAME.

California Extreme was a great show overall! It seemed like there were less pins and more dance and vintage video games. Did others who attended feel the same? Pinball machines were spread throughout but within different locations, not sure I liked it or not. After a mile plus, thanks to my apple watch keeping track of my steps for the day, I became familiarized with the layout. Most of the pins were in good condition. Pinballbulbs.com had the best condition and working games...My vote for (Best of Show). Lines to play their games were at least a 10 minute wait, but well worth the experience. First time playing Congo and a treat with the additional mods in the game. Have to say I had a good first game scoring almost 300M, probably a crap score but not bad walking up to a table and not understanding the layout or rule set. There were a few Kiss Pro's, one being raffled at the front entrance doorway to the exhibit, two just inside inside past the entrance and one at Marco Specialties booth. I have to say I was pretty impressed with the game play. Tough narrow ramp shots but wicked fast and rewarding when hitting the left and right combo's. I'm not certain of the rule set but I did like the pop bumpers where they're positioned and when they lit up notifying me that a skill shot was involved to activate a mode (multiball??...can't recall) The bumpers reminded me a lot of NGG, though were punchy moving the ball at lighting fast speeds...it was very cool. The led lighting was pretty nice. I unfortunately did not spend a lot of time looking at the screen on the DMD. Main objective was to experience the pro and hope to look forward to receiving my LE on order. Have to say...I'm very excited! Those on the fence about purchasing the pro, I would say it's a great game and one with additional code development on the way, Borg will not disappoint. Wish I could give more of an in-depth review, but I only had a few game plays. I haven't been this excited about owning another pin since MET and what a game that one turned out to be! Kingpin was a blast as always to play; wish this game would get remade. Had some fun on BBB, always a treat though both of these games needed some novus. Not complaining of course...and a big thanks to those owners willing to bring it to show for pinball enthusiasts to drool over. Gotta run some errands, so I have to end this post. Thanks to all involved for making it a great show!

Biggest reason I stopped going to the Midwest Gaming Classic as it is also way to crowded to play a game, let alone get to an open one.

I love coming to CAX! There are so many great games and great people. We are seeing old friends and making new ones. Our talked yesterday with Brian Madden of Mission Pinball was fun. This was the first show we have been to where we could say we had actually SHIPPED HARDWARE!

If you are reading this and haven't stopped by the FAST Pinball booth, please do! (It's the booth that looks like a workshop in the middle area!) Come check the new FAST hardware and see how it works!

It's hot and humid up here in the City. (no AC)
Thanks again to everyone that volunteered and put on the show...
Putting together a good dose of nostalgia (which for me comes from early vids), is a taller order, and much appreciated.

This was my first CAX and glad I went to Pin-a-Gogo first. PAGG is my speed. The heat from crowds and games makes playing tough, as was the layout. I got lost trying to find my way out more than once.

Parking was a bad deal, I drove up from the Central Valley and arrived just after 10, ended up in the free garage about 15-20min walk away. IMO stay at the hotel if you can, paying more is paying less for other misery.

I enjoyed the talks including the updates from JJP.

I think all of pinballers had the same idea to come back late for easier play, and so at 12AM Saturday the pins were still mostly full, arcades less so.

I'd be inclined to pass on CAX over PAGG, but could see going to CAX occasionally.

Thanks to all who put on the show and supported. Its clearly quite the effort and appreciate all who brought in games and made it a fun event.

Congrats to Jim Belsito for the win, Josh Henderson 2nd, Joey Springer 3rd, Kevin Birrell 4th!

Those pics don't do Pinball Bulbs justice. I was already happy with the way my MB looks (CoinTaker kit), but after seeing theirs, I had to copy it and grab a bunch of bulbs. Their MM, Congo, and Shadow look great too.

I'll be here until 9, so if you see a guy with a bunch of tattoos wearing an 8-bit Walking Dead shirt, that would be me.

#241 4 years ago

I just realized I failed at meeting (new to me) Pinsiders at the show. I didn't see a SINGLE Pinside badge. I had mine on the whole time. Oh well... I guess we'll leave it to PAGG for the introductions...

Did you like the way my translite looked? Because from the photos I hated it. And I've never, ever, seen colored lights behind it that I like even a little bit. Cool white is all it needs.

Edit: Damnit Belsito, leave some trophies for the rest of pinball!

I have your translite with the cool white LEDs and I like it better that way.

I didn't like their LED choices in MB and Congo, as I thought it was too much.

I did like the lighting on the Wh20 though.

#245 4 years ago

Some of the LEDs were so terrible in the above video, that I could not recognize the games.

I thought it looked badass, and I heard several other people say they thought it looked awesome. It had kind of an ominous look with the purples/pinks back there (at least that's what I think was in there).

Quoted from vid1900:

Most camera's make LEDs look bad in my experience. The intensity and range from dark and light is too much for a single exposure making things look washed out or overlit. In person the weren't bad, but I would still say a lot of people then to over light with LED either adding color where color already exists, or creating too many hot spots making dark areas a even a bit harder to read.

#248 4 years ago

Thanks to all the volunteers and people who contributed games.

CAX is always a good time, and it wouldn't be possible without all of their hard work and generosity!

I am also happy I finally got to play a linked NBAFB!

Can anyone refresh my memory on the Early SM Gotlieb game with the alien sexpot and card theme that was next to Alien Poker? I meant to take note of it and look it up later and forgot the name. Almost 60's go-go style.

Packed up and headed home,

1st California Extreme ever
Damn that was fun!
Great attitude from everyone I met there
Awesome game selection

Had way too much fun playing Panic Park and my hand is sore.
P3 has improved a bunch from the last time I saw it.
Very nice tournament area and easy to know when your turn was.

Only constructive criticism I have is you guys need more SQ ft, but if you didn't get more I would love to go again.

See you jokers at PAGG
