Working on a 1941 Genco Argentine that had some serious structural damage. Seems lately every pin I pick up has a bad leg joint or splitting backbox exc. This one was a bit tricky as it had a full length split along the back panel where the back box bolts onto. I could have taken the route of removing the whole panel, cutting out a new one, installing and then painting but I thought I could salvage what was there. It needed to be strong too without obstructing the play field which led to some minor modifications to the side blades and play field but in the end I was happy with the results.

Still need to putty up the holes and slight cracks then touch up. After that its onto fixing the back box which has a corner falling apart and a bad split in the top. Hard to complain about a nearly 80 year old pin though.

More to come on the back box and I added a few pics of its current condition overall.

Thanks
Blake

Back box wood working is coming along nicely. Main issues were separated corner braces and overall looseness on the board that mounts to the cabinet.

Glued seams and added #6 1.25”/1.5” flat head wood screws where nails were previously used.

Split in top of back box will be addressed next. Here are some pics and video.

Finally got around to working on the coin door. It has had a least one repair attempt previously. Top edge was tricky with the lips to properly seat depth wise, edges that were not necessarily 90 degrees, and cutouts for lock down bar wing nuts. But I think it came out pretty good. 3 coats of bondo to get it to where it is now. Growing up in the used car business helped alot on this part

Because of how rough the overall paint and pattern are I am going to repaint it all, rather then attempt touch up. Luckily the exact sized pattern appears on the side of the cabinet. So I was able to trace that out and will have a nice stencil to work with while painting. Color matching here we come!

Thanks
Blake

First go for the coin door was too off and missing the far left two inches as it wasn’t quite centered as the side of cabinet.

So this time I did it right on the coin door. I had to freehand about a third of the image. But I think it came out much better.

Now to print off copies so I can make a stencil for each color and then it will be color matching time.

Thanks
Blake

- Stripped the coin door and sanded flat. Left some tooth with 150 grit.
- Two coats of primer.
- Two coats of primary Top coat tan.

Had pretty decent results finding a color match but needed to apply with a roller (first time as I usually rattle can it. 4” high density foam roller took some getting use to (light light coats) but came out very nicely in the end. No orange peel or paint strokes.

Stencils and 3 other top coat colors to come. In the process now. I have learned a lot about what not to do when using stencils I can laugh now because it’s almost done and looks decent.

Thanks
Blake

Lots of mistakes. Lots of corrections. But considering this was my first attempt at creating my own stencils, I'd say it turned out okay. Pics are before final sand (1500-2000), polish and wax.

Several things I will be doing differently next time:

- Change material of stencil. I made it out of poster board which in my mind was sub-par. If you plan on tracing out the image of your stencil onto the actual substrate that you're painting on then poster board is perfectly fine. Thats what I ended up doing towards the end. I'm thinking some type of very thin polycarbonate or alike.

- Remove stencil as soon as paint coat has been finished. At first I was leaving this on in anticipation of my second coat and merely because of the way I cut my stencil for the blue which was the first color. It would have been difficult to remove and reapply in the exact location. This became an issue as paint bled through and expanded. As well as sticking to the poster board.

- If masking off, use high quality "Delicate surface" Frogtape. There simply is no comparison to any other painters tape. I know, because I failed with the others. Admittedly I took liberties with following rules in regards to this project. Not waiting long enough between coats, taping over fresh paint, removing tape late, exc. Having catastrophic failures that made you want to sand to bare wood (Did this once) will make you throw rules out the window. Bottom line is you can put frog tape over 30 min old latex paint and remove it (carefully!!!) without issue.

- Use an HVLP or rattle can if colors match. I rolled this project after spraying the initial primer coats. Mainly because it was borderline to cold to spray and the colors were hard to match. And while I'll admit after getting use to how a high density foam roller spreads paint (can look very nice) I still believe I can get a better finish spraying. I do like knowing I'm able to do paint projects inside though. Especially in cold VT weather.

- Color match. I'd say do a better job next time but this shits harder then it looks. ME: "I can match that no problem!" 2 hours later ME: Fuck it. This will do.

Thanks
Blake

- 5 cent coin mech disassembled, cleaned, polished
- Coin door reassembled

Here are a couple before and after pics. Made a lot of mistakes/corrections and learned a lot about what NOT to do. Overall I think it came out alright.
Next stencil job will be much better. I'm anxious to redeem myself.

Thanks

Quoted from mark532011:

Man that looks great. I think you should keep those old patches though, maybe chrome them

Thanks!
Always room for improvement but overall I’m happy how the machine has progressed.

Thanks
Blake
