Has any one purchased cabinet decals from Retro Refurbs in UK? They have a couple decals I would like to buy but there prices seem a little low. Afraid of the quality. Any advise? Looks to be good stuff. Hoping someone on here has purchased from them.

    Thanks Ace

Here is a huge thread that has more information than you will ever want to know.

Just ordered GI decals and they are on the way. Will let you all know when they arrive. Look pretty good though.
I don't want to read all that political bullshit, just want my GI to look $1M.

    #4 10 months ago

I got some recently, they look ok (more like a photographic scan than the original artwork) but are a fair bit smaller than the backbox, which is a bit troubling. Haven't sized up against the main cabinet yet. They are posted from a Croatian or similar address.

    #5 10 months ago

Just got some in 2 days ago -- haven't unfolded them out yet but from what I saw I was happy with quality. I can post some pics hopefully tmrw

I just got a set of IJ decals from them. Have not installed them but they looked pretty good to me and the price was just right including shipping.

    #11 10 months ago

Shipping was s little weird -- just got an email saying order complete -- no other shipping info. Wasn't sure they would show up but they did.. took I think 2 weeks or so since overseas

Edit: just noticed wpc backbox decal didn't ship with order..

    Hey Everyone!

We are here on Pinside but don't post very often, though we do make regular donations to help keep the site running! It's nice to see so many positive comments and I think I can chime in to help clear up a few things...

First off, I realize trust is always an issue with new or overseas suppliers so hopefully I can ease some concerns. We're absolutely committed to delivering a great product and great service. We have high standards for our own restorations so this applies to what we offer you as well. None of the artwork is scanned photocopies.

We are implementing new features and making improvements to the site/buying experience all the time, for example with shipping we have just added a function so that the tracking number and tracking link is automatically passed to you with the "Order Complete" email. If you haven't got a tracking number for your order, just ask!

New artworks are being added every month, and now we are also making our own custom and alternative artwork packages, so even more new stuff arriving all the time. Some recent additions include:

    - Street Fighter 2 Black Edition
    - Street Fighter 2 White Edition
    - Tales From The Crypt Red
    - T2 Chrome Edition
    - The Avengers Galaxy Edition
    - Spider Man City Addition

Alternative translites are also on the way.

In regards to decal sizing and overlap - originally we were trimming decals to be exactly the right size (very slightly smaller) so people could just apply them and do less work, but this has proved troublesome as cabinets warp and expand, not everyone has the same size. Now we are adding little extra. Worth noting is that our material is designed to be set with hot air once on your cabinet and if you smooth them out after warming they will expand very slightly, giving you more overlap. Videos for this are in production.

Lastly, we aren't perfect. We make mistakes (occasionally). That's life. The most important thing is how we deal with issues, and its always as quickly and professionally as possible. Replacements or refunds are necessary sometimes. If you ever have any problems, concerns or questions then I'm only a call or email away - usually best to email though and it means we have a record of conversations.

Your feedback is important and I will personally consider every comment and suggestion made to us. Happy to see people sharing their experiences with us here!

    Pete
    Retro Refurbs

P.S. Mbecker, I replied to your email please check. WPC backbox had to be sent in a separate tube.

    #13 10 months ago

Thanks Pete for chiming in-- I am interested to see these videos when they are complete and up! Tracking feature sounds great too. Thanks also -- got your email, it's all good I would not hesitate to buy again

Sure you can. Can you show me the license for the artwork you are selling ?

    Pete,

Do you have any plans to reproduce the generic Bally Midway (6803) cabinet designs?

    Thanks.

    #17 10 months ago

Just helped a friend install a set on his JD - really turned out nice - seem to be very good quality (I have bought sets for other machines from other vendors before, these seem to be as good or better). My only comment has already been stated, they were cut very snug so doing the original aligment was more tedious. I would favor a little more excess, especially for the back box.

Would that be important if you are buying cheap Viagra online ?

Yes, because I would be placing something inside my body that made my penis react chemically; that is very important to me.
As for a large sticker I don;t really care as long as it looks the same.

Look the same? I care if it is the only option on the block. If the license holder wants to step up and sell the product, GREAT! If they are going to twiddle their thumbs and sit on the films for years on end, screw em.

Yeah basically...Look the same, exist, cost savings...all that. I could give 2 shits if it has an official hologram or whatever lame as shit like that.

Ive used several sets of their decals and love them. Getting ready to do a TOTAN and I like the blue on these alot more than the PPS ones.

Pete do you have any more information on setting the decals?

My experience repairing cabinets is primarily on the Arcade side of things. I redone several cabinets with decals both printed and silk screened. All of those decals used a very good (high-end?) 3M paper/vinyl so they are a little different than the material your supplier uses.

Before I post a review, I'd be curious to know more about heat setting the decals. Mine don't seem to have any problem adhering, but still curious.

    Cheers!

That's a double standard right there. I understand your way of thinking, but it's not how my mind works.
My wife is an artist, so I am allergic to people using artwork they don't have the rights too.

The problem is that the license-holder will never step up if others are taking away the market with counterfeit materials. The market is just too small. The demand needs to be channeled more to the license-holder.

PS: I'll still happily talk pin to you guys and drink some beers offcourse

You don't have to set them with a hot air gun, they will adhere just fine without but the material is designed for vehicle wraps so can be manipulated with heat, creases and wrinkles can be eliminated, and also the adhesive becomes a bit more tacky which once cool will have bonded to the surface a bit better

Sorry if this has been covered. Is this vendor the same as HassanChop? He did cab art and was in Europe, but I thought Portugal.

The films have been out of Williams hands for 15 years now? The license holder failed to step up then what is to say they will bother to step up now. Why should I play a violin for them when they couldn't be bothered to fill demand?

williams is dead, rick is parading around in the clothes of a zombie and he isn't doing shit for a ton of decals. This is where retro comes in.

Hey Pete, I am a professional graphic installer by trade and have done hundreds of full vehicle wraps in my 27 years in the business. Curious as too what exact material you are printing on that has the air agress ?

Ordered 2 sets of TAF and WWH2O. All the edges are curled and have waves on all of them due to the shipping. They either were not shipped with end caps on the tubes or the end caps fell off during shipping.

Once applied a little heat should work that out unless they are damaged.

Sorry to hear about this. That's either caused by bad shipping handling, or more commonly, customs ripping the end caps and packing off. No problem however, just apply warmth from either a hot air gun or hair dryer on high heat setting. Wrinkles, creases, and curls will magically disappear. No issues at all.

Sometimes in the past this has been a concern for people, and they find it hard to believe how easily creases disappear, which is why im having to shoot some videos to show how it works.

No association or affiliation with us whatsoever, but he does do top notch work and is very nice fellow!

I just completed refurbishing an Attack From Mars using Retro Refurbs decals. I would 100% buy from them again. Print quality is excellent, material is durable and straightforward to apply. Myself and a buddy slowly/carefully installed them dry using the old painters tape method - pull back half the backing, apply, pull off the other half, apply, trim the excess, rinse-repeat. Finished result looks excellent and my Attack From Mars went from a marginal cabinet with extreme fade to a machine that looks brand new. I added black legs for a nice modern touch. Very happy with Retro Refurbs quality and price.

From order to delivery was about 2 weeks (which lets face it, it takes far more than 2 weeks to prepare a cabinet properly to receive new decals so go ahead and order and then begin your tear down and bondo work, etc.

    #42 9 months ago

What's the preferred method to trim off the excess? I'm about to do 2 cabinets (well, in the spring) and don't want to screw it up!

    #43 9 months ago

What kind of prep work is required for good adhesion? What is typical install time - roughly? Either per side, total job, per sq. ft., I don't care just looking for an estimate. How easy is installation with only 1 person?

    #44 9 months ago

Excess decal trimming with a straight edge and a sharp exacto blade - 2 people are required to really do this well in my opinion.

    #45 9 months ago

Install time was about 36 hours of my time with about 10 hours of time from a buddy. It's a LONG process to do this job well. It took 4 weeks to finish with 8 days of paint curing time allowed in there and just fitting it in my day to day schedule a few hours here and there. Biggest effort by far is cabinet prep.

That includes the prep time, right? It did not take you 36 hours to put the actual decals on?

Decals should only be few hours, prep time is huge though -- all that sanding and bondo and more sanding....

    Quoted from StrangeSubset1:

Correct. Decal application was about 90 minutes with the help of a friend to align the decals, tape them in place, carefully squeegee them down, hold the straightedge, cut all the edges and holes, etc.

Tearing down a pinball machine for new decals is VERY time consuming as you want to remove virtually all internal parts, PCBs, wiring, etc - not to mention every bolt comes off, every connector needs to be removed...I knew it was going to be a lot of work but....it was ALOT OF WORK!!

    #49 9 months ago

Ive bought many sets to date all have come up terrific would happily buy again

    1 week later
    #50 9 months ago

A friend purchased a set and I watched the installation yesterday. I think, they are fine for what they are. The decals he purchased were not totally true to the originals, artwork was slightly larger and did not match-up correctly. Had to shift the cab decals down about an inch -inch and a half from the top of the cab or the logo would have been covered by the side rails.

My only other "compliant" was that he had a guy with a ton of vinyl experience come over to apply, he used a felt covered squeegee and even with the felt he ended up with superficial scratches on the vinyl. You could see almost every squeegee stroke-changed felt and it made no difference. It's not something you could see from afar, but noticeable with the cab laying on its side under lighting. I was kind of surprised by this.
