I've been reading the forums for a while and see plenty of warnings about buying off ebay and similar sites. I'm just wondering how people living in the UK go about finding pins to buy? For NIB it's pretty obvious but I am rather keen to pick up some older machines like a LOTR and while I've found a few websites for dealer types who offer older machines, just wondering if they are good sources or should be treated with caution like a peer to peer transaction.

Yeah, as others have said pinball info and the 'uk pinball' yahoo group are the best options if you want to buy an older machine from another collector. There are some good machines on eBay but prices tend to be high - however some people use eBay as an advertising platform and are willing to accept more sensible offers. Good luck!
