Hi all, I am looking to buy a CFTBL, and was wondering from everyone's experience with them, what are some of the things to look out for when buying one?

Obviously the hologram is the most talked about feature, but are there other areas of the playfield and such that are sometimes over looked?

Can anyone also clarify the "rarity" of the hot pink vs skin pink version, I have come across a number of threads regarding this but none seem to have a definitive answer, should an "original" machine have the hot pink version or skin pink version?

Thanks in advance guys

Hologram/mirror motors are the big one and snack bar hole wear. Hot pink vs pale pink are really just a preference. Honestly just look over the normal stuff like battery damage and any wire hacks.

some will give a error code and people get worried - but after 20 games of not hitting the multiball spiral ramp to the bowl the error shows up, once you hit that ramp the error leaves

Ramps and plastics can get expensive really quick. As always, check the Cpu for battery damage and scoop or kickout holes.

What’s the error, because every once in a great while I’ll get ice cream switch error upon start up. But I’ll just run a test and hit the switch and it’s cleared. I always wondered why this happens. This will be nice to know that all I have to do is play better instead of popping the glass

As you and others mentioned, Hologram and Snack Bar hole are the biggies. Other things to check:

- Inlane damage where the ball drops onto the playfield from ramp, popper & bowl
- Have any mods been done? Lighted speaker panel, lighted bumpers, and the Swinks Snackbar are not essential but nice ones to have
- Broken plastics, particularly the car plastics on the left side. They should be fairly long, if not they have been broken off
- Wear at the Paid inserts above bumpers
- Make sure the lift ramp works or you will not get the ball to the whirlpool bowl
- Check the subway ramp under the playfield for damage (manual refers to it as "ball trough")

Cabinet graphic fade. The hot dog on the front should be red, not purple.
Graphic wear at the flipper buttons. Often parts of the monsters are worn away.
Wrinkles around leg tops.
The plastics are always broken. It's supposed to have flaps over the KISS and SNACK BAR scoops.
The 'tailfin' plastic on the left is often broken in two.
The KISS lane diverter wire breaks.
The Up/Down ramp mech
The Snack bar scoop hole gets blown out.
Hologram fade from green to blue to black. Light and motors.
Chase lamps on the ramp and whirlpool
Light dividers behind translight CREATURE can be busted or missing or making the backglass extremely hard to slide up.
Battery corrosion on WPC board - coin door diag buttons
GI connector burn on driver board
SLIDE up-kicker

IMHO the best two mods are the speaker panel mod that lights up the bumpers/starlight sign/moon and a color dmd. And both are pretty spendy and are generally factored into the price.

if the game has a few mods like the speaker pnale that lights up, the colordmd, pinballMikeD holo mod the 12volt off the boardset is pretty stretched and some had issues at this point and if not when I released snackbar mod v1 it was the straw that broke the camels back as it needed 12vdc as well and shutdown some game mods - the work around was a separate power supply off the service box inside the game. Snackbar mods 2 and 3 no longer used 12vdc for this reason.

yeah on this game if certain switches aren't hit within 20 games the error dot comes up and it tells you on boot up the switch errors - I can't remember what one it is but I make it my mission to target that switch for a few games and then do a check to see if the error is still there - most times it's gone - play better

Thanks swinks, as usual you know your shit when it comes to this game. It's always the ice cream switch for me but it's only happened a few times over the past year since getting the game and once I hit the switch it cleared right up.

no worries, caught me in the past, I learn through mistakes and happy to share

as for art, I don't know if the original came in the 2 options but Illinois Pinball did a reproduction run of regular playfields and then did 20 of the nude playfields with the girl nude and the scene in the car window altered. The hair colour is different in the nudes as I think they left a screen off for the brown.

I have a reproduction Illinois playfield but not the nude but also has the single colour hair colour and the missing brown screen colour on the icecream and hotdog, but has the hot pink.

This is what i was looking for, would never have noticed half of these things without this post

Almost all i have seen have the cabinet fade on the front resulting in no red and a purple hotdog, and the tailfin plastic broken, which is no big deal, but something i would not have personally noticed, and yes its broken most of the time

All great points which have been taken on board
