    Hi Guys,

I just did something dumb. After adjusting a star rollover switch that was being activated sometimes by bumper hits I thought, "I'll check the gap is big enough by activating the bumpers." As the playfield was up, I activated the lower bumper by pressing on the switch with a screwdriver from above to verify the bumper vibrations weren't still activating the rollover star switch. The bumper fired a few times, but then I noticed it wasn't working anymore. "How dumb can he be?" you are thinking. Doh

I put the playfield down and tried activating the bumper by pressing the bumper ring. No effect. Then I lifted the playfield and very cautiously shorted the bumper switch for a milli-second at the ends of the switchblades where the wires are soldered on. On the two functioning bumpers, this activated them. The defective bumper still didn't fire. I'm assuming, therefore, the problem is not the switch itself. I can see no loose wires and the switch blades are making good contact.

All rollovers, targets work fine. In fact everything else on the playfield works. The bumper fires when I do the solenoid test.

Where else should I be looking?

Have I killed an electronic component somewhere?

    Grateful for any hints.

What game? If it's one that doesn't have direct activated pops (gottlieb and some williams) go into switch test and see what you get when you press the platter down.

When you say you activated it with a screwdriver from the top, you mean on the top of the playfield or the top of the switch under the playfield? Top of the switch under the playfield with a conductive screwdriver is a no-no. (You're actually better off just using your finger if you must....)

You probably knocked something out of spec with the switch or its shorted. Switch test will help.

The switch test was a great hint. Switch 38 was stuck on. Turns out I had fried the capacitor on the switch. One little snip and the bumper came back to life. Thanks
