I always have great success removing mylar with freeze spray (air in a can). If you are fearful that your inserts are in poor condition, you can restore the mylar to like new condition fairly easily.
I use Treasure Coves playfield cleaning kit and it is unbelievable. The product is applied with a high speed drill and a series of buffing pads. The TC power cut three will do wonders on mylar. From there, use the 2 and 1 to achieve a high polish.

I prefer no mylar, however, I have owned a BSD and it does heat up the inserts. Worst case scenario is smoking decals on a playfield.

Good Luck

Quoted from goldpins:

That is exactly what I did....made a scan of my play field and from the scan reproduced the insert lettering. Touched these up using a graphics program. Printed these out on laser water slide decals. (When printing, I actually printed the decals twice to darken the lettering otherwise the lettering was too transparent.) Cleaned off/prepared the insert as needed (scraped/sanded off all the decal sometimes). Placed on the decal per the instructions. Spot clear coated the insert. Looks pretty good. Not perfect, but you have to look hard to see the decals. I have some insert images I'd send if anyone wants to play with them. Some I used, some I didn't. It a good start for someone to tweak to get them the way they want.

That is a skill that I don't have...
