I always have great success removing mylar with freeze spray (air in a can). If you are fearful that your inserts are in poor condition, you can restore the mylar to like new condition fairly easily.
I use Treasure Coves playfield cleaning kit and it is unbelievable. The product is applied with a high speed drill and a series of buffing pads. The TC power cut three will do wonders on mylar. From there, use the 2 and 1 to achieve a high polish.

I prefer no mylar, however, I have owned a BSD and it does heat up the inserts. Worst case scenario is smoking decals on a playfield.
