Could be an flaky opto somewhere above or below the PF--game thinks the ball is somewhere it's not so it sends up another one--so put the game in T1 for a couple hours and do something else nearby to listen for false closures/openings; the DMD will of course show the last switch triggered (why you want to be nearby in case there's more than one).
