Just as a follow up, thank you Ken. Your documentation has been indispensable. I finally repaired the power supply today (got 28v back by replacing the BR) so now it is flipping, and a while back my students and I built/wrote an Arduino-based switch matrix that detects closures.
Not bad for a headless/lose wires project that was $75!
