Playing STTNG last night when suddenly the left flipper no longer returns to the rest position. Still works -sort of-, but does not return. I thought this was the return spring, but no. The flipper plate is broken clean. Never saw this before. Is it common?

On older plates that are original to high play games, yes. My DW had to have both plates removed due to the stops almost being completely snapped off, and I KNOW that game was rode hard and put away wet

I had a Rollergames with a compromised plate. Wasn't as bad as that but there was a clear fissure. Had to be replaced.

From the look of it there is rust on one side, so it's probably been partly broken for a while and finally collapsed yesterday. It's in excellent shape though so it's not a game that been ridden hard. The funny thing is that this happened right after someone came to look at the game.

It happened on a Robocop I owned years ago... That's a DE example of it happening. The plate that broke apart on mine was not rusted or corroded.

On the Rollergames I had, I believe it was caused by incorrect installation of a new flipper coil that bent the plate, so always look out for that.

Common in commercial use. I go through a couple a year. More common is the allen head bolt shearing off.
