I had a Universe at one time that worked pretty well, but if yours is broken, you might want to start a repair thread in the EM section.
Plenty of knowledgable guys there can help you get to the root of your problem.

Nothing other than keep the dust off your glass or protect the glass if you are the type to stack things on your pins when you aren't using them.

I don’t have a dedicated gameroom or basement so 1) the towels help protect against sunlight fading and 2) I live in a desert and it’s very dusty so the towels keep the dust off
Also , as stated above , they are great to keep handy for nut jobs 
- see the way he bounces against the pin ?
