I have been working on a Silverball Mania game that I got about a month ago.

    Lights are running
Switches are running - at least sounds happen when I trigger them
    Flippers are flipping
    I can start a game
    Test mode works

When I get to solenoid test in test mode none of the solenoids are firing.

I have read another post on Silverball Mania that was 4 years old and they suggested fuses on under the playfield. I have tested the continuity of the fuses, wires, and fuse holders. I have replaced the fuses in good measure but still no solenoids

    Any thoughts?

Are all of the connectors plugged in? Maybe it's something obvious like that

    #3 1 year ago

Yes, everything is connected. Brand new driver board from Alltek. Voltage leds on the driver board are green and no errors on the solenoid leds.

I can start a game and the flippers work.

Are the pf fuses wired properly? Maybe a picture from under the pf and the backbox would help.

Sure I can add some pictures.

I checked the voltage on each lug of each solenoid with the power on. Each one was about 38vdc. I check the resistance of each diode with the power off and they were all about the same, 11ish.

I tested all of the switches that should be activating the solenoids and they all result in a sound but no action.

The fuses are both brand new 1amp slow burn.

You need to test for solenoid voltage at the rectifier board and at the coils that aren't working. Game in attract mode, meter on DC voltage, negative lead to ground plane or ground strap in back box, positive lead to test point 5 on rectifier board. Around 45 volts? Then test the non-working coils.

Negative lead to ground strap in lower cab, positive lead to either lug of non-working coils. SDB completes the ground circuit for coils, but if they aren't getting the positive juice, nothing to ground.

Tp5 is about 43vdc. Voltage on solenoids has been tested as you suggested and each one is about 38vdc.

I went past the solenoid test in the test mode and got to the switch test. I found that coin switch 9 was stuck in the on position. It turns out it is just a funky bent wire and there is nothing wrong with the switch. I can now test all of the switches in test mode and they all fire.

Could be an MPU or driver board problem, I would email Alltek

    #12 1 year ago

I just talked to Dave from Alltek, I have talked to him a couple of times. That guy is awesome and a serious asset to the pinball community! I can't thank him enough for the time (multiple calls) he has spent with me diagnosing the issues. Because the switches are working and making sound, this comes from the MPU board, there is likely not a problem with the MPU. I am going to repin the J4 connector on the solenoid board and see if that fixes things up.

I found that the pin in the connector for J4-7 was toast. I put on a new pin and it is working. Thanks to those who offered some help, and thanks to Dave for walking me through a few things. I learned some stuff along the way for next time

Playfield fuse holders wear out over time and from the pics you posted it looks like the blades on at least one of yours have separated and are no longer making good contact. Consider replacing those fuse holders sooner rather than later.
