I picked up a cheap project Black Knight tonight. It looks pretty bad and won't start a game - just the type of project I was looking for. It's going to take a bit of work to bring it back and thought I'd share the progress here. Here are the "before" pictures.

It's good to see others out there like me, saving great games from an uncertain future. Enjoy!

It's alive! I'm waiting on a transistor to fix a row of cpu lights and the speech is very quiet. I suspect a bad amp on the speech board. But it boots and I can start a game now.

The playfields have been stripped and the touch ups are nearly complete.

I just picked up a Black Knight last week, good luck!
I picked up a Grand Lizard last month that had broken top glass and a dead squirrel on the playfield. Boards are sound, drums were playing and everything, so its going to be a cosmetic overhaul. Going to start it in the fall. Look forward to seeing your progress...

Thanks!

For anyone who runs in to the same problem, I got the speech to work. The sounds worked all along, but the speech was very quiet - almost inaudible. As suspected, it was a bad 1458 amp at IC3 on the speech board. That chip is equivalent to an NTE778A.

Moving on the cabinet.

I have the playfield finished and clear coated, and I've started on the cabinet.

The cabinet is painted. It was challenging to get the stencils to line up. The instructions said to line up the bottom left corner of each stencil with the cabinet. That didn't work for me. I had to adjust the second stencil to get it to line up. I think it turned out nice anyway.

Just about there. I need to replace some touchy lamp sockets and a switch that doesn't always register. The new displays will be here on Sunday. I'd replaced the female side of the 40 pin connector and thought the male side looked ok. After blowing the solenoid fuse several times, however, I decided to also replace the male pins and haven't blown a fuse since.
